Thread: George or John ?

Hi



How possible is it for the same person to be registered under different names. My gr grandfather was called George deVall born about 1786 in Rugeley i have this from the census of 1841 onwards when he lived in Dudley and he had his own hatshop i also have him in Pigots directory 1835 and Bentleys 1841 directory as a master hatter. I could not find him on the Rugeley parish reg but there is a John deVall born 1786 to a Samuel and Martha John married a Sarah as did George and i have spoke to someone who is related to the Samuel and Martha and her deValls were also Hatters. George had a son called John and when i looked him up on IGI it gave his fathers name as John instead of George i assumed it was a mistake George also had a daughter called Martha.

Is it possible George and John are the same person any theories or ideas would be great.

Thanks for that i do think it needs a wee bit more research. Someone else was looking for him in the rugeley parish registers but could not find him either but she was saying how a good bit of the register is so badly faded it is unreadable. But i will keep trying
