Thread: Lookup please - South Africa

Could someone help me to find some trace of my mother's birth please. Old SA records are almost inaccessible. Details are as follows:



Daphne Gloria DEWAR born March 1921 in Durban, South Africa, mother Lilian Florence (nee HODGES) and father John William DEWAR



It is possible that her birth was registered at the Consulate and is shown under GRO CONSULAR BIRTH INDICES (on FMP)



If at all possible, could you also lookup the Consular Marriages to see if you can find her parents' marriage, which may be some year earlier.



I understand she had a sister who died in the 1918 flu epidemic in Durban, so any info on that would be wonderful.

If you have your mother's South African Identity Number

you can apply to the Department of Home Affairs for a

copy of her Birth Certificate. I must just point out that

it takes months!!

Unless you have an ID number it is impossible. There were no ID numbers before the 1960s or thereabouts, and I have been told at Home Affairs that there is no chance!

Sorry that was no help. I know that without an ID Number it

is hopeless, my Mom was born in 1909 and she had an ID Number but

it took me 7 months to get a copy of her Birth Certficate!!



I checked the SA Archives but all I have come up with for

Lilian and John was a reference to divorce proceedings.



I also checked Findmypast Consular Births and Marriages

but had no luck.

hanks very much Val, it's very kind of you to go to that trouble.



I am just not sure of one thing........ did you actually look up that information on Find your Past? I mean.... do you have a sub? or was it just a general enquiry?



I may be forced to buy some units to see what I can find, but as you know it is terribly expensive when those pounds are converted into Rand, and that's why I thought perhaps someone who had a sub could help me.

I have a few credits and looked at some images but maybe I didn't get the right

years for the marriage which is why perhaps someone who actually has a

subscription will have more success.



It's because of the exchange rate that I haven't taken out a subscription

but only bought credits.
