Thread: How do you find which church your family member is buried

I live in Canada so it is not easy for me to go looking in grave yards. I have traced a GGrandmother Isabella Gibson who died in Burnley Lancashire in 1921. Is there a way of finding where to look for her grave. I am waiting for her death certificate so I will have more info,but I still would like to know if there is a web site or if I will have to write all Church records in the Burnley area. Being able to get to a graveyard doesn't help. Many have been built over, gravestones illegible, fallen over or never existed.



Burials are recorded in parish burial registers, kept in the county archives. By 1921 many churchyards were already full and there were municipal cemeteries too, plus crematoria.



You should be able to find a list of these on the relevant council website. Some councils - don't hold your breath!- have online searchable indexes. Others don't and many private cemeteries charge to search.



There's also the possibility that your lady was buried in an existing family plot which might not be nearby.



My gt grandfather died 1917 in North London but he was buried in a Norfolk village churchyard in his wife's grave.
