Default James Esherwood, born c1869 - please can anyone help?

I have a James Esherwood, age 42 in 1911 census - born london, occ Barrack labourer, married 16 years, 4 live children. language English, religion R Catholic.

    on same census:

wife: Kathleen - age 38? born Co. Wicklow.

daughter: Mary Anne - age 8 scholar - born dublin. (can read and write)

son: bartholomew james - age 5 - scholar - born dublin (cannot read and write)

son: joseph - age 3 - born dublin (cannot read and write)

Daughter: Kathleen Frances - age 8 months - born dublin (cannot read and write).

they were living in dublin, this is from 1911 Irish census: Residents of house number 52 in Royal Barracks (Arran Quay, Dublin)

James Esherwood was from London - english, but i cant find any trace of him in uk census or birth etc... any ideas?

i am told that Kathleen's maiden name is WHISTON

the daughter Mary anne died in birmingham, uk in 1977 - she had married William Byrne c1924. they came to uk (birmingham - with the army?) in 1927?

the only proof i have been able to find so far is the 1911 census and a record of the 3/6 childs birth: Byrne/Esherwood :

    Births Jun 1930

    Byrne William J (Esherwood) Birmingham S. 6d180

stuck now and would like to find out anything else about them that i can please.

INfact just realised my james had been married 16 years in 1911 Irish census.. he must have married 1895. cant find any james in uk census that match him prior to 1895. he would have been 26 when he married but did not have first child until he was 34 - does this sound right?

    is irish 1901 census online?

If James was 42 in 1911, then he would have been born around 1869.

Ancestry has army service records for

    James Esherwood14 abt 1868 Westminster Middlesex 1882

The records show James was attested 7 Nov 1882. He says he is a sailor, born Westminster.

    wife 2nd (!!) Kathleen Esherwood

At some point he fractured his right leg.

He had a dark complexion and dark brown eyes and hair.

Have you got access to Ancestry as you can see the images (8 pages) and maybe be better at deciphering the writing. Some of the pages are a bit ragged so hard to see.

He was re-engaged on 3rd Oct 1894 at Berwick upon Tweed for the Royal Dublin Fusilliers for 21 years. Originally 1882 he was with the Kings Own Borderers.

He was 4ft 2 when he was 14, so I expect he grew a bit more.

Sadly I can't see a home address. The address where he was attested looks like "Fermoy".

If James was a sailor to start with, and then in the army, that might explain why you haven't been able to find him earlier.

Maybe his father was also a sailor/in the army, and James might have been born abroad.

He may have said he was born in London as he may not have known where he was born.
