Thread: WILLIAM COMPTON IN MARGATE.KENT

Hi

Can any one help please.i am looking for imformation about WILLIAM COMPTON born in Scotland i can not give a date of birth as he seems to change his age on every census.

He was a Conductor of a Orchester in MARGATE on the 1911 census living at 177 HIGH ST.MARGATE,with his wife NELLIE & children ,one child was born in MARGATE she was DORTHY COMPTON born 1910.

Now if he is the WILLIAM i am looking for he either married or lived with several women all over the country & at present i have at least 11 children born to him,according to the people in this tree he just up sticks & leaves,leaving the women to cope on there own .

Does any one know how i can find records of the Orchester he worked for ,any info on this man would be very welcome .

Depends on whether it was a local orchestra in Margate or whether he commuted up to London, but I imagine all the major orchestras would have details of their resident/permanent conductors.



What was his occupation in 1910 and where was he living then?

William Compton was living in 177 HIGH ST.MARGATE IN THE PARISH OF ST,JOHN THE BAPTIST on the 1911 census. His youngest daughter Dorothy was 1 years old & born in Margate so i am presuming he must have worked there for at least one year ,on census he has just put CONDUCTOR OF ORCHESTER,all his other children of this marriage & wife were born in Yorkshire Sheffield.

I am almost certain this is the right WILLIAM as he is listed on all other census as Muscian & always born in Scotland ,there is no records for his death any where that i have searched,he did marry his first wife & told his family that he married the second one in France ?.

All the families have said he just disapeared, i have been waiting for the 1911 census to try & trace him .

Any help you could give would be gratefully recieved by all his descendance.

I have not sent for birth cert yet,i have been waiting for 1911 census as no one in family could find his death & we all were praying that he would turn up on that census.

Now i just have to prove it is the same WILLIAM as all we have is ,he was born in Scotland a Muscian/Conductor & had a habit of disapearing also if it is him this will be the third census he has changed his date of birth.

We were told he did work in Covent Garden Theatre,i wrote to them & asked for a record of this ,but had no reply.

So i will now try & get the last child i have birthcert.

or the Margate/Kent Musical Soc - if there is one -

Hi I see you are looking for info on William Compton. My dad was williams son. His name is Lawrence George Compton born in Battersea London in 1899. Lawrences mum was Elizabeth Benfield. They married in France in 1889. He was in a orchestra then and played in London don't know the name of the orchestra would love to know if you find out. They had 5 children William,Nellie,Reginald,Lilian and my Dad Lawrence not long after his birth William left the family now living in Leamington Spa moved to Margate and started again marrying Nellie. Elizabeth was left to bring up the family. William left Elizabeth alot to play abroad.
