    Default THURGATE

I am researching the surname THURGATE which seems to appear mainly in Norfolk and the London/ Middlesex area. My William Thurgate was born c.1797 in London to William and Jane (nee) Ash, he also had a sister Mary born c.1800. William came to Australia as a sailmaker on the ship Brothers in 1825. I have found a death on the free bdm site for what I think may be his parents: William in March quarter 1848 and Jane in March quarter 1842 at Oswestry Shropshire, but I don't know if it the same couple although I did find a marriage for Mary Thurgate to William George Davenport in May 1828 at Oswestry so I'm hoping !!!Any help with this surname in either Norfolk, London or Shropshire would be greatly appreciated as I live in Australia and find it particularly hard to research from here.

    Many thanks. Nambucca

    Hi,

Don't know if this helps, because you weren't sure whether the Shropshire couple were the right ones.

    Name: William Thurgate

Age: 78 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1763

    Gender: Male

    Civil Parish: Knockin

    Hundred: Oswestry (Lower Division)

    County/Island: Shropshire

    Country: England

    View Image

    Registration district: Oswestry

    Sub registration district:Knockin

    Household Members:

    William Thurgate 78 (therefore b.1763)

    Jane Thurgate 81 (therefore b. 1760)

Also in this household, but not shown on the summary

Jane Devenport - 12 (born in the county).

Familysearch shows Jane Davenport (christened 6 Mar 1829 in Oswestry) to be the daughter of William George Davenport and Mary.

Living in Shropshire, I sometimes go out to the Shropshire Archive (Research and Record Service). Not planning a trip at the moment, but the next time I'm in Shrewsbury I'll take the details with me.

One thing I will look for is if I can find out whether Mary Thurgate was 'of this parish' or not when she married W G Davenport (easier to do than looking to see if Jane Ash was a long way from home when she married in London).

One point that concerns me is if the couple in Shropshire are the right ones then, given their age, they were 'quite old' when they married and started a family.

Let me know if there is anything else that might direct any research at the Shropshire Archive.

    Hi Mags,

Thanks so much for your reply. The only thing I have on William and Jane is the date of their marriage in Spitalfield London on 7th July 1793. I agree that they were a little late starting (if it is the same couple), but perhaps it was a second marriage. I did look up the original many years ago on the LDS reel but do not remember if it mentioned if they were b & s or previously married.

Their daughter Mary was born (or baptised) on 28th April 1800.

This is all I have on them so any help you give will be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks,

    Ricki
