Default Henry Carter - Kirkburton to New Zealand

Henry Carter was born 2 January 1824 (according to the Kirkburton Parish Church Baptisms Index). I'm looking for further information about him. He was the subject of a newspaper article in New Zealand (that I thought was legend until I came across it at Christmas in a box of papers/photos given to mum by one of my cousins recently). At the time of the article he was an octogenarian, having been in Devonport for almost 60 years. He was married, though his wife died in 1906. Where can I start to try to find out details in New Zealand? I’m trying to find out whether he married before or after he sailed. Are marriage/death registers online for NZ (as they are for UK)? Any info, gratefully received. Thanks.

Could not find a marriage for Henry in the BDM which starts at 1840.

The following may be the marriages of his children. No further info, but may be a lead and also the only deaths I could see that may tie in.

    Cheers, Glen

    Registration # Bride's Name(s) Groom's Name(s)

1876/1082 Emily Allington Charles Henry Carter

1878/2233 Ellen Boland Ernest Henry Carter

    1906/3964 Carter Mary 80Y

    Glen,

Thank you very much for the information. I'd almost forgotten about posting the request.

I haven't found anything (yet) to tie any of the names in, but in a week's time am going to my parents' for the weekend, and mum has the Kirkburton baptism and marriage register indexes. Hopefully some of the details you have provided will help me find a marriage for Henry - if he married before he moved out to New Zealand.

I could have my work cut out though, as I've just noticed that in 1841 there were 2 Henry Carters, similar ages living next door to each other, both in families of edge tool makers. I may never work out which one moved to New Zealand.

    Thanks again for looking.

I'm a bit tied up at the moment but if you are still looking for info on Henry I'm sure I can help. I've got (I assume) our line back to the late seventeenth century.

Is this the Henry you refer to, the date fits. His parents where John and Betty Carter. There is another Henry baptised 5 Sep 1824 parents Benjamin and Mary. All the below info should be checked.

Here is one mistake, their marriage was in Huddersfield not Sheffield. This makes sense because Kirkburton is near Huddersfield

Robert, Thanks for posting the reply. I'd be interested to know, when you have time, who your ancestors are, and whether we have any information we can share. I'm one of Cook Carter's grandchildren.

Thanks Noggin28 for the information. it renews my interest in this 'sideline' to the family.

I am inclined to think that the Henry who emigrated from Kirkburton is the son of John and Betty, as they are my 3x great grandparents. I haven't looked at this part of my research for a while, but will probably consider getting Henry's marriage certificate to confirm his father's name.

It wasn't going to be a Family History day today (housework needs attention), but I think that's about to change!

If you need any info from Tasmiania PM me. I have a friend who lives there and likes a bit of Famil Hisiory detective work. Not only that she has Carters in her family.

I'm definitely going to order the marriage certificate - I've got to know if Henry is 'one of ours'.

Isn't the Internet wonderful. Picking the right search terms, I've found tascoastalcemeteries.com and a search on Carter brings up a page about Jane Moore Carter and Henry Carter. There's an article headed 'A Coastal Pioneer', and the text within is word for word that of sections of the rather brown, cellotaped and partly illegible newspaper cutting I found in the box at Christmas.

The bit that confuses me is that this is definitely Tasmania, but the newspaper cutting is headed 'Kirkburton Octogenarian in New Zealand'. In 1914ish, were Tasmania's ties stronger with New Zealand than Australia?

Thanks very much for the information that has pointed me in the right direction.

    Gotcha!

Save your brass Mags, granddaughter of Cook Carter, son of Sam b 1852, son of Edwin 1818-1897, son of John 1793-1866 son of Joseph (1753-1827) son of Jeremiah 1728-1812, (and this is where it may get a bit ropy) son of David (b1695) son of Jeremiah who married in Huddersfield in 1683.

I am also descended from Joseph (1753-1827) through his youngest son Robert (1801-1837).

Henry was definitely one of us, son of John (1793-1866) and Betty. I can confirm that he married Jane, daughter of Joseph Moore, a cloth dresser, of Huddersfield, in 1852.

Both mark-signed which, considering his future success in Van Demons Land (Tasmania), is a bit surprising. It was definitely Tasmania. I have a copy of his obituary which says that he never left the island even to go to the mainland.

I met one of Henry’s descendants when they visited England about twenty years ago and they sent me some material including photographs which I will try to get to you.

As I say, I am rather tied-up with another project at the moment but I will try to get back to you in a few weeks.

    All the best Robert.
