Default Robinsons Busts Appletons Sharps Leonards Naylors in Winterton

I am searching for any information on Robinsons or Busts or Appletons or Sharps or Leonards or Naylors in Winterton (and Winteringham, etc).

In particular, looking for info on relatives of Mary and Hannah Bust, Henry and John Robinson. Mystery is John emigrates to Sydney Australia in late 1800s as John Bourne Robinson. He regularly receives mail from his "sisters" Mary Bust (based Scarboro') and Sissy Appleton ('The Green', Nettleham) addressed to John Bust. They mention a niece Millicent who travels to America tovisit relatives circa 1913. His daughter receives mail addressed to Clarice Bust. John's father was supposedly Henry Robinson.

Hope someone can solve mystery of whether the family name is Robinson or Bust.

    Hello

Have you John age marriage etc. In 1871 in Winteron Lincolnshire there is a Hannah 52 (w) she has a daughter Hannah 26 son John 22 Frederick 17 Joseph 14. Strangely enough on the same page are a family of Robinson's. In 1871 I have the same family Hannah's husband Henry is still alive they have a so Henry 14 Daughters Martha and Sarah 3.

I have found them on other census if you think this might be them I will keep looking.

    Hi Robert

The only relevant Robinson I can find is

    Births Dec 1904

ROBINSON John Bourne Stamford 7a 328, which is too late.

There is no John Bust registered for birth in Glanford Brigg, which it would have to be for both Winterton and Winteringham.

Found Hannah in 1871 with mother Hannah and bro John age 22.

The only John Bust/Hannah Bust relates to the family of Henry c 1815 and Hannah c 1818. No sign of a marriage on the IGI.

    Cannot find them in 1841.

However in 1851 in Winterton there is a 2 year old John Bust who was born in West Halton, which is in the same stretch of the woods. Son of Henry 35 a farmer and Hannah 32. Elizabeth Robinson is a servant. Hannah is born in West Halton!!

In 1861 the family is in Edlington farming 400 acres, no job is given to any of the children.

    Deaths Jun 1865

    Bust Henry Glanford B 7a 392

This tallies with the 71 census as Hannah is widowed and John is 22. John has a 26 yr old sister Hannah.

Next door to the Busts in 1871, Joseph Robinson is the Farm Bailiff of Grange Farm where Henry was the farmer in 1851.

    Deaths Sep 1871

    Bust Hannah aged 53 Glanford B. 7a 400

In 1881 Hannah jnr 35 is housekeeper for a Robison family in Lincoln. Obviously this may be pure coincidence.

John Bust b 1849 is missing from the 1881 and subsequent censuses. There is no death for a John Bust that tallies.

    Hi Kimmy & Mark F

    Some brilliant work there.

    1. John Bust (or John Bourne Robinson) married Elizabeth Jane Leach 6 May 1878 in Sydney. Their marriage cert says he was aged 30 and only the John Bust born 1849 is the only one I've ever found in IGI but that does tally because as you know, working backwards to DOBs from ages stated on marriage or death certs are always plus or minus 1 year (1848 or 1849). I reckon he's the one though Mark. What was the full DOB for John? I may as well update his family tree entry while I have it open..

    2. I found that "coincidence" of Hannah Bust housekeeping for Henry Thomas Robinson, magistrate and bank manager and Anne Robinson (both in their 60s and both born in Hull) very puzzling. Address was 1 Lindrum Terrace, Lincoln in the 1881 Census. What's even more bizzare is that younger sister, Mary Bust is also listed as a housekeeper for the Burkill or Burkenshaw family in Winteringham I seem to remember. Haven't found any children so far, much less a John Bourne Robinson. Speaking whom, how weird you've found another John Bourne Robinson. His ancestors and descendants may be worth looking into. A great piece of research Mark.

    3. Kimmy the Busts you have found info on sound right to me as Frederic and Joseph both get mentioned in the sister letters to JB. So yes, please keep looking if you can spare the time.

    4. In a letter from Sissy Appleton (nee Bust) 1913, she mentions Martin married Lizzie Leonard. I'm guessing the he's a Martin Bust. The Busts seem to have lots of aunts and uncles named Sharp, Leonard or Naylor. Lots of intermarriage and employment in those small villiages in those days no doubt. Suppose the Robinsons are also in the mix hence the Robinsons / Busts housekeeping for each other. As you can see people loved to recycle christian names (e.g. Martin Bust ad nauseum). Hannah seems to be a bi favourite too. BTW any idea what Sissy is a nickname for? Is that her real name? I know Jack meant John.

    5. Finding Robinsons living next door to Busts is also very interesting. Another link I guess. Who was in that household?

    8. So Henry and Hannah bust only lived 51 and 53 years respectivel. Boy, short lives in those days.

If you wish to pursue her fully, you'll need to get the birth certificate.

Among Glandford Brigg births, no names jump out to show the name Sissie, so it's obviously a pet name. However Sissie could be a diminutive for "Sister"!!
