Thread: Transported to Australia in 1844/6

I have a distant relative named James Farmer who was born in 1812. He lived in Worcestershire and was convicted of sheep stealing in 1844 and transported on the ship Maitland. (He arrived in Australia in 1846.

How can i find out more?

Are there any lists kept in Australia or websites i can glean from?

James may have actually landed in Victoria as I can't see where the Maitland landed in Tasmania in 1846. I also cannot find anything on James Farmer in Tasmania.



I have found a death in Victoria in 1853 for a James Farmer aged 40 at Pentridge. Pentridge was a prison in Melbourne. The age fits as he was supposed to be 32 when he arrived in Australia. But this is just a thought. The Registration No. for this death is 5558.



I found him on Claim A Convict, link attached. If you click on his name it will give you an email address of the person who has claimed him. Not sure if the email address is still current but it is worth a go.
