    Default Birth Certificate Help...Please

    Hi everyone,

I am going to order a birth certificate and am searching Ancestry in order to work out the GRO index number. My relative, Sarah Ann Fisher, (Fisher was her maiden name), was down on all the census' as being born in Deptford, (Kent/London). I believe her birth date to be about 1852/53 and was just wondering what district Deptford would come under at that time?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

    Hello

I think it was still Kent at the time, but I would contact Maidstone which is the county Archives or Deptford library.

Thanks for your advice Kim, to be honest I'm struggling to find the required Quarter/District Name/Vol & Page Number that I need for the GRO. All I know was that Sarah Ann Fisher was born to a William and Sarah Fisher in 1853 in Depford. Ancestry is often a year or so out when listing birth details but looking at the actual 1881/1891 and 1901 census papers it does appear in this case that Sarah was born in 1853 - I also noted that it appears as Deptford KENT until the later census' where it becomes Deptford LONDON.

Would you be able to find the Vol/Page details from the above information on Ancestry or would you need more?

    Hello,

Most of Deptford was in the Greenwich Reg Dist until 1899. There is a Sarah Fisher in 1851

Thank you very much to all of you for your help - Victoria I think you may have just found my Sarah Ann Fisher - I had her down as dying in 1921 aged 71 so her being born in Dec 1851 makes this birth the likely person.

However saying that when looking on the FreeBMD website there is a Sarah Ann Fisher born in Bethnal Green in June 1852, but I think she couldn't be the right person as she wouldn't be 71 in 1921.

i think victoria might have found the right one but as you say there are others that might fit. dont place to much emphasis on the age at death, especially if only a year or two out. the age at death given very much depended upon the knowledge of the person registering the death - they can be quite inaccurate, unless registered by a very close relative and even then people have been known to lie about their age

if you get the marriage certificate you will find the fathers name- you can then specify the fathers name as a checking point if you want the birth certificate and then can be sure you have the right person. if you just order the birth certificate you wont know if it is the right one.

ignore the second part - it was a load of rubbish

i had just been helping someone else where they didnt know the fathers name. you know that already. if you want to order victorias birth certificate you could add a checking point of william as fathers name and then if it is not the right one then gro will refund £3 and not issue.
