Totally stuck .

I am trying to find Herbert Hall born Newington 1878 according to the 1901 census where he was a piano tuner and was a lodger living with his future brother in law.

He married Edith Foreman in Islington 1904 and came to Cardiff His father is James, according to marriage cert a publican and he was a traveller .

I cant find a James and Herbert together I have purchased to wrong birth certs twice I have found a James Hall at the Wenlock Arms Hoxton in 1901 but not sure if he is the right James Any help appreciated

Tricky. I'm wondering, as Herbert lived in Islington and Hackney, whether his birthplace should have read "Stoke Newington" or "Newington Green" which are both in North London?



This seems a likely birth registration for him

Hope it isn't one you already have. Alternatively, its possible Herbert was registered with a different name - maybe James was a stepfather or a made up father to hide Herbert's illegitimacy.



Are there any clues with the witnesses on the marriage cert?

I have that one fathers name was Arthur and I have one from Islington Herbert James William Hall with a father James It doesnt seem right although age matches No there is nothing on marriage cert Two witnesses were from Foreman side I was not certain on the Newington are they both in the same parish

What didn't seem right about Herbert James William Hall? Perhaps if you could find him on 1901 you could eliminate him. If not, he may be your man.

No I cant find Herbert James or mother Kate on the 1901 census James in those days was a Railway clerk It just seems weird he would have changed professions to be a publican Is there a register of publicans in London
