    Default the woodwards of kingsley, cheshire,uk

    I'm trying to find out what happened to ancestors of mine, one of whom was transported to Australia in 1835. John Woodward (born or baptized 20th February, 1814) had a number of siblings whose birth-dates I have but nothing else, except for Alice Woodward who married Joseph Oultram in Frodsham in 1827.

    My question is: does anyone out these know anything about the following other siblings:

    Sarah Woodward, born 18th September, 1794:

    Betty " " 15th January, 1797;

    Thomas " " 22nd March, 1799;

    James " " 23rd January, 1802;

    Alice " " 13th July, 1806; (I know she married, but where did she live, and when did she die?

    Nancy, born 16th November,1811;

    Richard, born 29th December, 1816.

    Of course, many of these little ones may not have survived, but there must be records?

    Can anyone help? My interest is in those who stayed behind when one of their family was transported. how did they feel about a crim on the family?

    any information gratefully received!

    Regards,

    Paulette

    Hello Paulette,

    Where was you John born for 1814? I can try with helping you find his Convict record.. Crim I would think not for the crimes they were transported to Australia for would make you cry. Most were half staved on the journey over and those they did make it here but could not walk were thrown over board for the sharks. I have just finished helping a friend of mine search out her convict Ancestors who were transported to Australia on The Neptune. Paulette can you give me some birth places for...

    Dont be surprised if some of the siblings were also transported to Australia...This I have found with helping fellow Australian friends happened a great deal.

    Paulette read this...Tell me if this was your John would you not be proud...I also have a photo of him but you would need to give me your email address. Perhaps send it to me as a private message...Anyway here goes..

    Marion

    John Woodward was a Tailor from cheshire transported as a 21 year old for 14 years in 1836 per Moffat.

    He was in Bathurst and had just finished his sentence when the goldrush started.

    He ran the 'First Nugget' Hotel in Bathurst and later set up a general store and post office near where Orange now stands.

    He bought 8 town blocks including blocks 1 and 2 of section 1 when the town of Orange was auctioned.

    He built the first brick building in Orange and called it 'Manchester House' where he ran his tailoring and manchester business till he died in 1873 as a wealthy man. The building still exists as the Metropolitan Hotel.

    Paulette I cant take the credit for the above. Its all down to someone named Colin...

    Paulette....The Moffatt was the name of the Convict Ship your John Woodward was transported on...

    John WOODWARD, 22, b. CHS, S, Tailor, Trial: Chester 1835; Sentence: 14Y; T: 1836 to NSW, Ship: Moffatt

    If you Google Search Moffatt Convict Ship there are many links that will give you an insight to the Moffatt itself.

    I do hope I have been of some help to you.

    If the John Woodward Marion is talking about is your Woodward then I have some information on him in Australia as he is linked to my family. My Cummins family were also publicans in Orange owning the Carrier's Arms Hotel (still there but now Kelly's Rugby Hotel although the original building burnt down around 1895 and rebuilt).

    John Woodward married late in life. He married Eliza Mary West in 1850 in Orange they had 13 children the last being born in 1872. One of his sons Ernest A Woodward b 1861 in Orange became a Doctor and was Mayor of Blayney. He married Sara Lamrock in 1892 in Orange, I have links to the Lamrock family. Ernest and Sara had only one child Dayrell King Woodward born 1895 and died in 1917.

    On John's death records his parents are listed as Thomas and Sarah Woodward.

    Paulette,

    I transcribed this marriage from St Lawrence, Frodsham, some time ago, could this be connected to your Richard Woodward?

    12 NOV 1849 David YEARSLEY/full/bach/Labourer/Norley/John Yearsley/Lab m Eliza Woodward/junior/Norley/Richard Woodward/Lab. After Banns. Witnessed by John Youd & Rachel Maddock

    I also have a burial for a Richard Woodward at St John's, Norley on 26 JAN 1874 resident of Norley aged 75y.

    Deakin.
