Thread: REQ 1881 Census George Sowter - Central London District School

Hello



This is my first posting - I hope someone can help



I am reasearching my family tree faollowing the recent death of my Father George William Cyril Sowter



I am afraid I cannot go back very far.



The 1881 census shows Geo Wm. Sowter age 5 and Christopher Sowter age 3 as Inmates ine the Central London Dist School and their place of birth as St George the MArtyr Surrey.



I wnet to the London Metroplitan Records office today and accessed the creed records .



I found them as beiong admitted on 3rd June 1980 - with Parents unknown



Can anyone please help me go back further



I can help going forward from George - as I am the last MAle sowter on this branch - I have now details of Christopher .



I am fairly new to all this so apologies in advance

Have you found either of the births and ordered certs to get parents names, or do you have any other info.

and there's also a birth for a Christopher Noah Sowter 1876 Oct-Dec St Saviour 1d p.69

I have a copy Birth Certificate for Christopher Charles Sowter born 25.1.1879 (reg district St Saviour) ( which could tie in with the 1881 census) - Mother Susan Louisa Sowter ( formerly Farrow ? or similar Father Christpher Sowter - occupation "word lawyer"/ "wood Sawer" ? - no birth registered for Geo William.



Seems strange that Christopher was registered but then a year later went into a home .



There was also a Christopher Noah Sowter registered in St Saviours district as well about 2 years earlier - - presumably a different family ?



Not at all clear cut

There are quite a few Sowter births and deaths in St Saviour Southwark, but if you get the above cert for Christopher Charles it might give you the parents names to help you go back further.



Alternatively if you can find marriages for Christopher and George, their marriage certs would give their father's name and occupation, assuming they were legitimate.

our posts crossed. I think the birth cert ties in nicely with the 1881 census. The father's occupation would be sawyer. I expect the other Sowter may well be a relative - perhaps a cousin. I don't think its a particularly common surname and it is in the same area.



I can't see a death for either of the parents listed on the cert.

On checking the copy Birth Certificate the home address is given as 33 Tower Street Southwark



On checking Free BMD I note that a Christopher Charles Sowter was married in Chelsea District in 1897

Emma J. SOWTER Daur U 10 m Southwark, Surrey



this is the family from the birth certificate you have, but how does it link in with your father? If this is the right lot, then the ones in the school can't be yours.

So the question is - how did you get back from your father to this lot? Who was your father's father?



I can see you easily barking up the wrong family tree!
