    Hi Bren

I have found a J S Chadderton abt 1892 leaving Liverpool on 27 Jun 1913 travelling to Quebec on the Empress of Britain. His occupation was given as a spinner.

There is an entry for Grace Chadderton abt 1894 travelling with Harry Chadderton abt 1918 on the 17 June 1927 to Quebec on the Albertic. Her occupation is that of Weaver.

Couldn't see any other entries that tied in with his year of birth

I have found an entry on Ancestry for UK incoming passengers 1920

    James Chadderton

    Birth Date: abt 1891

    Age: 29

Port of Departure: Montréal, Québec, Canada

    Arrival Date: 6 Nov 1920

    Port of Arrival: Liverpool, England

    Ship Name: Canada

    Shipping Line: White Star Line

    Official Number: 106806

    his occupation was shipbuilding.

But not sure if it is him..

sounds like a good possibility, everything matches expect for the occupation, we have a free diectory search here in montreal, and the last entry for james was in 1919 , which would coincide with the james chadderton ( he was listed in directory as chadderton , no slater ) seeing as my nan left in 1919 it went make some sense, however the ship builder throws me,when my nan left she stated at immigration that the father of her child, was james chadderton of 1859 jaques hertel, montreal, but a search of lovell does not list him, actually the address does not even show................i am guessing that he never left canada, but may have went to another province after my grandmother and father left.i wonder if james and grace divorced? my nan ended up using the surname ponting as did my father, when she met and lived with mr william arthur ponting in 1930,( hence me being a ponting) all my fathers army, marriages and medical records are in the ponting surname, but i have never been able to trace when the change occur, other than it was after they returned to canada in 1927 and before my father enlisted in 1939, ,,,,,,,,,,,would this have to be a legal name change in those days? i cannot see how a person can enlist, and marry twice, under another name, that to what is on his birth records?????????? such complicated mysteries are ancestors left us !

    Hi Bren

I don't think there were any legal requirements to use a name...

.. but maybe someone else might be able to clarify this for you..

Hi raven, thank you for the info you sent, the departure of james matches my info, he arrived here 4 july 1913, not departed and the info for grace chadderton is spot on..................i am going to try to find more info on the james chadderton that left canda in 1920, got a good feeling about it.....who knows maybe he lied about his occupation and i will try researching for grace whalley's departure in 1912, can figure out who she was destined to, her family never left lancashire lol. and she was so young to be all alone : ( thank you again, let me know if you ever need a name or address look up, here in montreal. our directory site is awesome, covers as far back as mid 1800's ! I also have a memebership for our national archives here in quebec where i can research quebec births marriages and deaths.
