Default Charlton Mackrell, Somerset Look-up KNIGHT

    Hi

I am trying to locate the birth/baptism of a Robert KNIGHT believed to have been born in the 1780s. I know he married Sarah Bartlett in Babcary, Somerset in 1809. His given parish at the time of the marriage was Charlton Mackrell, Somerset.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Regards

    Jim

    Hello Jim,

Having looked on Hugh Wallis's web site, it looks as though only the marriages of Charlton Mackrell are on the IGI. Looking on GENUKI web site for Somerset, then Charlton Mackrell, there are some transcriptions of baptisms and marriages, but unfortunately in your case, they don't start until 1813.

    Hi Jim

Looks like a visit to the Records Office, I reckon.

A little speculation or a chancy hope!!

This is not close to Babcary/Charlton Mackrell, being nearer to Bridgwater.

However, Sarah was his wife's name, so it is fair that he would name a daughter as such.

In 1841 the ages were rounded down , so his age would be between 50 and 55

Allowing for an enumerator's spelling mistake, Kingsdon is just south of Charlton Mackrell.

As he is not around in the 1861 census, I suspect this is his death.

    Deaths Jun 1858

    Knight Robert Bridgwater 5c 301

Bridgwater RD covers both Pawlett, and Kingsdon

    Hi Mark

Many thanks for your help with the research. I've had a closer look at the census entries via ancestry.co.uk, especially 1851. I'm inclined to agree with the view that this Robert was born in Kingsdon, nr Charlton Mackrell. His daughter Sarah (possibly named after her mother?) was born in East Pennard which is just up the road from Baltonsborough, where my Robert Knight's son William was baptised. As you say he died in 1858, aged 74, and was buried in Huntspill. I've also found the burial of a Sarah Knight in 1832, aged 45, in Huntspill - this would fit as she is absent from the 1841 census (obviously dead!). There are a number of very good indicators from this data - worth following up.

As I live in Sheffield a visit to SRO is sadly a distant reality!

Very much appreciate the heads up on the census info - may well point me in the right direction.

    Regards

    Jim
