Default I'm Stuck......Any Chance of Help Please?

I think I've done reasonably well so far but have now hit a brick wall..........

I have traced back to William Noyes who married Hannah Gregory in Winnall, Winchester 1779, moved to Bishops Sutton and was finally buried in Winnall in 1834.

Then I have to assume.....there was a William baptised in Itchen Stoke (just up the road) in 1754 who was the son of a Thomas and a Sarah Noyes One of the witnesses at the marriage of William and Hannah was Thomas Noyes. I would be interested to know if anyone thinks this is a safe or unprobable assumption to make.

My second problem - where do I go from Thomas and Sarah. I know they were married in Itchen Stoke in 1743 but the parish records don't show any further Noyes, Noyce etc for Itchen Stoke. Any ideas would be gratefully received.

    Thanks for anyones help!

I would think it is a reasonable assumption that william was son of thomas and sarah especialy if there are no other noyes around. The surname is not the most common and the dates certainly fit in and the witness also makes you think so . i am not sure at parish records level we can always get the "definite " proof we would like.

as to where to go next - um... difficult.... i would widen my search to the parishs around the area to see if there are any more noyes around and see if you can fit them together to either william or thomas. i would also investigate sarahs family as they often interlink somewhere further back or through siblings etc too.

I'd agree, you need to look at nearby parishes. You might also want to consider any other parish chest documents and records that exist in the relevant records office. There may have been requests for parish support, settlement disputes, rents paid etc.

    Hi Plack150,

Noyes is quite a common name in Hampshire. Although I have the parish records for around that time, they do not contain enough information to be certain. I agree with Jeuel that a good starting point would be the Parish chest.

With Thomas and Sarah, I would also look at the baptisms of any of their children. All you need is something like, son of Thomas Noyes native of the parish of ..... and Sarah native of the parish of ..... and then you can start going back again.

Also check out the churches in that area around that time. Some tended to do just baptisms and others more marriages.

    Hi

Thank you for the replies; they do a great deal to point me in the right direction. It's more than likely that I'll be back for more advice in the near future!

One further thing for Starlight: you said " Although I have the parish records for around that time, they do not contain enough information to be certain".................is there anything that could give me a clue at all?

    Thanks again

    Hi Plack,

Unfortunately, the further you go back the less information is given on the parish records. Unless you can find something in the parish chest that will help link them, you may find that you have to go through all the parishes and elliminating all those that you find married elsewhere.

A large percentage of men in Hampshire at that time were agricultural labourers. After harvest time many found there was no work until the following year and needed help to support their families. If the parish was supporting them this is where you might find them mentioned in the parish chest. A visit to Winchester records office may help if you are not too far away.

I have a Thomas Goodchild born C1701 in my tree. He married Ann Dumper of Compton at Otterbourne in 1730. He was not born in either of these parishes. I have been lucky in that I have made contact with a few people that have been searching through each parish and have now got it down to a possible birth at Wickham. The Thomas there left Wickham and so far has not been found married to someone else. It has taken me 20 years to get it down to him but I still have no deffinate proof.

    Hi Starlight

Thanks for your help again. I am at the Records Office soon and will do as you suggested in tracking them down in neighbourhood parishes.

It's interesting what you say about Thomas Goodchild which proves it can be a worthy uphill struggle sometimes!

    Hi Plack,

When you go, it might help to take a copy of the naming patterns and the names of William and Hannah's children with you. I have found that most of my families stuck strictly to this pattern around that time.
