    Default CENSUS HELP

I am looking for THOMAS SMITH, wife JANE nee DOUGLAS with a daughter MARY SMITH.

The thing is, it could be anywhere in ENGLAND!

The information I have so far-

I have MARY SMITH b. 1858/9, father THOMAS SMITH tailor journeyman, mother JANE nee DOUGLAS.

From the 1881 census, where she is a visitor in GLASGOW, she is b. ENGLAND somewhere??

She married in Glasgow 1882 to DONALD BIGGS & this is where I discovered her parent details.

I do not know where they were from, where they married, where Mary was born, whether they had other children, nor where Thomas or Jane died.

    Jane died before 1882 & Thomas between 1882 & 1913. Mary died 1913.

On the 1891/1901 census in Glasgow, she is b. ENGLAND.

I am hoping the 1861 or 1871 census will have a listing somewhere for this family. Trouble is, if Jane died in childbirth, or in the early years after Mary was born, then it narrows it down some.

I have looked for Thomas Smith, tailor journeyman, on the 1881 census & haven`t had much luck pinning him down. There are a few whose age would maybe fit, but how do I know which one is mine!

He may even have remarried & living with his wife rather than be listed as a widower.

He would have to have probably been born sometime between 1815 & 1835 roughly.

    I HATE Smith!

Speaking of surnames, my maiden name was HENDERSON! Mary Smith was my great grandmother & her daughter Mary Elizabeth Biggs married William George HENDERSON.

I don`t know how difficult a task I have given. If it is too difficult please say so!

    Thank uou,

    maggiem

it is a very difficult task. Given that you know the fathers name and mothers maiden name and assuming that as mary was born england i would be searching for the record of their marriage in england. i would search for all instances of jane douglas marriages in england say in a five year period around her birth year and then extend that to 10 year as there could have been more children. you would need to cross reference each marriage to see if they married a thomas smith . very laborious and time consuming but dont know of any other way to make progress. if you find any possibles you would need to thentrace them in the census to wither rule them in or out.

have you tried looking for thomas smith tailor married to a jane in other census before the 1881 or thomas on his own in 1891 or 1901 . you will end up with more than one possible candidates but by cross referencing with occupations ,whether they have any other child born 1858/9 which may rule them, and the marriage records you find you might be lucky and find them

It will be very time consumming and you would need to write down what you find carefully. but it is possible that you could find them
