Please bear with me... this is a bit of a confusing tale ~ you may need to take notes!!! It's taken me a while to unravell it, I can tell you!
I'm trying to find where my Edith Augusta Woolnough has disappeared to.
I think she was the illegitimate daughter of Marie Woolnough who married James Baker 2 years after Edith was born. Edith, aged 4, appears on the 1871census with her mother & James as Augusta Baker & later as Edith A Baker.
She's on the 1891 census at home with her stepfather James Baker under the name of Woolnough, as his stepdaughter, with her 2 ~ I think ~ illegitimate daughters. They are recorded as his Grandaughters, (interestingly one is registered at birth as Woolnough & one as Baker. Edith's mother died 1890/1891).
By the time the 1901 census comes out her daughters have their Grandfather's surname 'Baker', are recorded as his daughters & Edith is absent.
When one of the girls gets married her Grandfather is a witness & also is down as her father ~ so it is possible that Edith has either married or died & that he has adopted the girls?
(mind you ~ she is the one that was registered at birth with the 'Baker' surname ~ so I'm only guessing 'till I get her birth cert who her mother was!)
Only trouble is I can't find Edith in the Marriage Index or in the Death Index as either Woolnough or Baker.
Her birth details are Edith Augusta Woolnough, Born Q2 1867 in N.Aylesford.
I'm dying to get to the bottom of this puzzle & lay it to rest ~ so if anyone can get their heads round it I'd sure appreciate the help.
