Thread: William Henry (Hervey) Jewell b. in Devon Uk

Can anybody help please? My late Father was Patrick Jewell born in Liverpool, and his Grandfather was William Henry Jewell (B) 1844 the son of William Sawyer Jewell and Elmina Maria Cox. William Henry was born in Devon U.K and his parents were born in U.S.A, or so I believed until I saw someone else’s family tree. I don't know if my William Henry was their William Hervey? But I thought it a bit of a coincidence. I haven’t any dates for Elmina and was wondering, could anyone help me with the name differences, and dates if you have them please. William Henry Jewell was born in Plympton St Mary Cornwall/Devon. in the 1881 census was at Kings Nympton, Devon aged 22. He was a coast guard in 1881 on the vessel Imogene renamed as Argus in 1884. In the 1901 census he was aged 44 Lived in Cranmer st, Liverpool, and married to Sarah Roberts. All I wish to know is, Elmina's birth date, and relation of william henry to william Hervey.

The only William Jewells born within a year of 1844 with fathers called William on 1851 English census were not born in Devon. Do you have an actual place? What is your information based on?

This is the only one in Devon.

There are of course a lot more plain William Jewells registered within a year of 1844.



I can't find a baptism that matches the information you gave either.

www.familysearch.org has marriage between William Sawyer Jewell and Elmina M. Cox 24 MAR 1839 and says WSJ was born New York 1816, son of Sawyer Jewell and Sarah Douglas.

The only Elmina Jewell on the censuses was born Gloucestershire 1870.



What makes you think that your Jewells were originally American? Where do you get William Henry Jewell's name and parentage from?

You say William Henry Jewell (B) 1844, then go on to say...............William Henry Jewell was born in Plympton St Mary Cornwall/Devon. in the 1881 census was at Kings Nympton, Devon aged 22 (this would make him born c. 1859) Please can you tell us which birth year is correct?

I'm sorry, most info I have is very sketchy, I can't be precise about any dates. I think I've been wasting my time, and that of others.
