Default Sayle - George b abt 1875 - searching for his parents

My Great Grandfather was George Albert Edward Sayle b ab 1875/1876. I cannot trace his parents.

On his marriage cert (25/12/1904 to Maggie Elizabeth Thompson) he stated his age was 28, and that his father was decd and had exactly the same names as him - George Albert Edward Sayle.

The only birth I can trace is on 20 July 1875 in 55 Lucknow St, Fratton, Portsea to a John Sayle and Elizabeth Mary Sayle nee Porter.

The only census entry I can trace is 1901 in which a George Sayle says he was born in Sandringham (Norfolk).

As his birth was reg by his mother, it's been suggested that she was unmarried and she was Miss Elizabeth Mary Sayle who used the name Porter when asked her maiden name. Apparently her servant and next door neighbours were called Porter.

Also there's a query that 55 Lucknow St was a pub called the Dukes Head at the time.

If anyone researching Sayles has any ideas I would be glad to receive them.

My grandmother, one of George Sayle's daughters, is still alive but cannot recall anything that helps answer the query about who her grandparents were.

    best wishes

George Albert Edward Sayle - not many of them around, I would have thought so I expect the registration you found is right.

Perhaps he was told by his mother that his father had the same name or possibly the vicar made a mistake when he filled in the certificate.

No trace of a Porter-Sayle marriage nor can I find likely candidates for George or his mother on censuses.

IF George was illegitimate its likely he was boarded out and may have been incorrectly transcribed, or given his foster parents' surname on the census.

Is the address for the informant the same as the address where the birth took place?

    Hi Helen

    Thanks for your thoughts.

I could not find a Porter/Sayle marriage either.

55 Lucknow Street, Fratton is 'where born' and 'address of informant' who was: mother Elizabeth Mary Sayle nee Porter. Birth was reg on 20 July 1875. I've just realised I said that was the date of birth in my first email - the date of birth was actually10 June 1875.

Also, the birth cert states that the father's occupation was 'commercial traveller'.

On George A E Sayle's marriage cert he states his father was a farrier.

    regards

    Stella
