I'm researching the following family threads:

1) Booker - My mother: Kathleen Lilian, my maternal grandfather:

William Brown and his father: David (Balby, Doncaster,

Yorkshire; other areas)

2) Davis - My father: William Robert and my paternal grandfather:

Irvine (Pontypridd, Wales; anywhere else in the UK)

3) Else - My maternal grandmother: May Victoria (Ashford, Kent;

Doncaster, Yorkshire)

4) Young - My maternal great grandmother: Henrietta Martha

(Yorkshire; elsewhere in the UK)

5) Keeling - My paternal grandmother: Beryl (Ashford, Kent; Doncaster,

Yorkshire and elsewhere)



My name is Cherry (nee Davis) and I've been researching our family genealogy since my mother died recently in London in May 2007. Other than my sister, mom and dad, I had no idea where I came from or from whom I was descended! A dysfunctional family - to say the least.



I was born in Wolverhampton and arrived in SA in 1959/60, but am still a British citizen. My dad died in South Africa when I was 15. On my mother's deathbed, she (at last) told my sister a little bit about her very troubled - and incredibly interesting - past.



I've had a little bit of luck tracing immediate ancestors so far, but not enough to fill in the dark, yawning blanks. Unfortunately, the SA Rand/UK pound exchange is so horrific that I'm trying to get as much info as possible before spending my hard-earned bucks on BMD certificates etc.



I have found IGI, freeBMD and freeCen to be a great help, up to a point, as their records are still incomplete.

Please can you tell us what the dark, yawning blanks are? Who exactly you are trying to trace, and whether you would like census look-ups. Thanks.

I prodigiously searched as many free genealogy records as I could (eg freeGEN, freeCEN, freeREG, freeBMD etc. These are the questions I don't have accurate answers for:



My paternal grandmother: Irene Beryl Keeling, b. 1899/1990 - Neath, Wales. She married Isaac Davis on an unknown date (probably during Dec 1919) in Pontypridd, Wales. I do not know who her parents were. Her father may be Alfred Keeling as he was married at Neath in 1894/5.



I almost sure my paternal grandfather was Isaac Davis, born c. 1896/7 in Pontypridd. I cannot find out the exact date or who his parent's were.



I do not know Irene's parent's names (her father might be Alfred Keeling m. in 1894, Neath, Wales. according to freeBMD).



My maternal grandfather was William Brown Booker. I cannot find anything about him. My maternal grandmother was May Victoria Else. They married in Doncaster, 4th Dec 1919 at the Parish Church of Selby, Doncaster, England.



William's father may be David Booker b. circa 1860.



My maternal g. grandmother was, I presume, Hernrietta Martha Young, b. Faversham, Kent in 1859/60. I have no idea who her parents were either. She may have been married to William Robert Else b. circa 1860.



William Robert's father may have been Daniel Else b. 1821/2 in West Ashford, Kent. He died in 1899.



Henrietta's parents may be Thomas Young and Marianne Clark.



I'm also trying to find out whether the Davis and Else lines are Jewish or not.



Look, I realize that this is a huge amount of work for you to look up, so I'd appreciate any help that any members can handle.

Alfred was a colliery carpenter born Stockport Cheshire. Alice Louisa is probably his second wife................I'll try now to ascertain this.
