    Default Illegible Occupation

Wonder if anyone would mind taking a look at this to see if they can decipher the occupation of Walter Hatherill. It looks as if he was a manager of some sort of shop. His place of birth has been transcribed as Bealy Hick, Kent but it looks like Bexleyheath to me

I've included the source which you may preferas the writing is pretty awful

    Source Citation:
    Class: RG13; Piece: 864; Folio: 116; Page: 42.

Walter Hatherill, 135 Ashburnham (I think) Road

    Many thanks

It's a difficult one isn't it. I thought it was something like Manager of............shop. It does look like the word iron or oil is there too.

I'll see if I can find him in an earlier census, Pity they didn't use block capitals in those days.

I think it says.......counter hand colour wool shop. Definitely counter hand, colour, and shop, I can't imagine what the other word is, if not wool. Maybe someone else can take a look.

Yes I noticed the colour but couldn't think what it meant. At least we agree he worked in a shop

"Manager for oil and fuel shop"... awful scrawl!!

As he was a counterhand ten years earlier the above seems feasible!! Certainly not the same enumerator!!

    Regards

Terrible writing isn't it? Looks like he'd had enough for the day, very messy too with the ink blots. I see now that they were different enumerators one being a bit easier to read.

I wonder what the word colour meant?

    Thanks for your help
