Default can someone be in two places at once. 1851 census?

    Hi.

I have been trying to find the most frustrating family and I thought I had the perfect match in 1841 for Frederick Rider and his sister Sarah living with who appeared to be a grandmother as her surname fitted perfectly with the miidle name of a brother.

However, following this family through to 1851 [bermondsey] I have Frederick and wife and children from 1841 still with 90 year old grandma plus the mother Sarah, [ a widow ] yet The mothr is definatley in Wear strret Sunderland with her daughter [Sarah]and son in law.

Would one or the other family have decided to stick mum in the census if, perhaps she normally lived with them but was with the other family at the time of the census ??

    Hi Seeker

The answer to your question is: YES!! D

I have quite a few like that over the years, particularly with children. Parents listed them at home....and then Aunt/Uncle or Granny listed them at their home as they happened to be staying there on Census night!

Thank you. Mother is Head of the family in Sunderland so That must have been her regular address, and visiting Frederick. Cheers

    Hi

Yes, my ancestor managed to cut himself in half for the 1861 census and appear in two places on the night. I think the head just put down who they thought would be in the household on that census night. This can be why someone who is staying with another family in the census which is not at his usual address will be recorded there and also his usual address which he was not at, the head put their name down before he left the house so it looks as if he appears in two places on one night.

    Hi

The census schedules were written out a couple of days before and collected a couple of days after the census date. The 1851 was taken on the 31 March 1851, right so the data was probably written a few days before and collected a few days after. I may need to view the actual enumeration schedule sheets to find out what day the info was collected to confirm things.

Someone may have alternated between two residences, or even moved residence inbetween census write out and collection of household schedules.

Hi Ben. I dont have the scheduals, only that someone has written out who was at the houses at the time of the census.

The thing is Sarah Ryder [Rider] is the head of the house, born Horsmead Hertsford [never heard of it] a widow, born about 1800, occupation Publican living with her daughter Sarah Prince, son in law Jonathan prince and a God [Grand?] daughter Harriett Williams at Wear Street Sunderland in 1851.

This is definatley the right Sarah

The other family who is the perfect fit has Sarah [mother ] with her son in Bermondsey

Are the places too far apart do you think to be the same Sarah?

    Registration District of Bermondsey/Leather Market

    >>

    >> FREDERICK RYDER HEAD 30, Clerk, born St John's, Southwark

    >>

    >> SARAH RYDER WIFE 36, born Bermondsey, Surrey

    >>

    >> Sarah Elizabeth Ryder DAUGHTER 3, born Bermondsey, Surrey

    >>

    >> Henry Bradford Ryder (transcribed as 'Ay Brafe'!!) SON 2, born Bermondsey

    >>

    >> Elizabeth Ryder DAUGHTER 3 months, born Bermondsey, Surrey

    >>

    >> Sarah Ryder MOTHER (of Frederick) 57, Widow, born Langley, Essex

    >>

    >> Elizabeth BRADFORD GRANDMOTHER 90, Widow, born Langley, Essex

    >>

I had the Frederick above in 1841 withthe old lady Elizabeth Bradford and also Elizabeth who was prfect fit for his sister Elizabeth Prince [Sunderland 1851.

In 1841 Sarah [mother was with her husband Paul[a publican] and son Henry Bradford in Stockton Durham. paul died in 1843.

In short nothing [or no one] else fits

    Cheers. Seeker
