    Default Missing GGG Grandfather

I am trying to find where my GGG Grandfather disappeared to!

Frederick James Head b. abt. 1834 Eastbourne

    Married 1855 Sarah Woolley

He appears on the 1841/51 census with his parent's. 1861 with his wife Sarah and child.

He and his wife have 8 children the last born 1867.

    After 1861 I can't find Frederick, & after 1871 I can't find 4 of his children.

1871 Sarah is in Eastbourne with children (wife of engineer)

1879 Sarah in service in Nottinghill, London (Mentioned in Father's Will)

1881 Sarah living with her sister in Hastings (married)

Has Frederick gone abroad with the children?

Missing children - George Edward 1863, Ernest Edmund 1865, Wallace 1867, Frank Rupert 1869 all born Eastbourne.

    Any help much appreciated.

Thanks for looking Kimmy - yes I have them on the 1871 with Sarah. The children go missing after this census, and Frederick the father is missing from after the 1861 census.

The fact that Sarah is in service in 1879 implies that Frederick wasn't around to provide for her.

He may have deserted her (and possibly changed his name)

    or emigrated

    or been imprisoned

    or in a hospital.

    Hi Jeuel

You may well be correct - but it is strange that four of the children are also missing!

Sarah (Frederick's wife) father left at Will dated 1879, the estate is shared between all his children, but regarding Sarah he writes "To Sarah wife of Frederick James Head, now in service at ......... for her own sole and separate use" So obviously Fredrick was still around!

Many thanks for taking the time to reply.

I think I would read it as Frederick possibly being in service (ie in the army?). A possibility.

Hi Helen - I believe it is Sarah that is in service in Nottinghill London (1879), for one reason or another she has been forced to support herself.

Frederick was a Millwright Engineer the same as his father. To complicated matter further, Frederick's father's second marriage was to the sister of Sarah, making father and son also brother's-in-law!!

You have left me a thread regarding an Edmund is this a mistake?

Thank you once again for your time and efforts.
