Thread: Finding Ada Pettican...

Hi,



I have been trying to find out what became of a distant relative of mine. Her name was Ada Pettican b. 1877 in West Bergholt, Essex. Her parents were William and Sarah Pettican and Ada was one of 10 brothers and sisters to that couple.



I have seen her listed in both the 1881 & 1891 Census' (the latter as age 14) but after that I cannot seem to find out what happened to her. I was wondering if she died or perhaps married before the next census and her name changed, I'm not sure, but she's one of the few people that I cannot find out anything further on.



I was wondering if some kind soul wouldn't mind having a look for me as it's become quite frustrating

Hi - thanks for your searches so far. I have been able to grasp a little more info - my Ada appears to have the middle name Florence and was definitely born in 1877. I have seen that Ada Mary Pettican mentioned before but her birth date is too far out (I've seen 1871-73). On FreeBMD my Ada comes up as Ada Florence Pettican Vol. 4a Page 386.



Also I have been told she was a General Servant in a household in Copford - aged 14 in the 1891 Census but again after that I know nothing more about her...

I have searched the marriage index from 1894 to 1901 and there is no marriage for an Ada Pettican. The nearest name is Flora Ada 1897 June.



I then found her on the 1881 census with parent's but on the 1891 the name is Eva and birth year is 1873 so assume not the correct one.

She could therefore have died sometime after 1881?

As per my most recent post she was still alive when the 1891 census was taken - she was working as a General Servant age 14 to a married couple. So more likely she died sometime after 1891 - however when or where I have no further news. Thanks for searching through the marriages for me. It's all a bit of a mystery as I've been able to trace the rest of her 9 brothers and sisters.

If you go to Find My Past.com and type in Ada Pettican - birth year 1877 and put in a death date of about 100 years after her birth you'll see 1 record under the 1891 census. That's my Ada.

I am not a member of Find My Past. I will have another look on Ancestry, she must be mistranscribed!

Found her transcribed as Pellican!



Will now look for a death.



Suppose she could have moved in with someone and taken their name without marrying!
