    Default looking for Sydney Burton

Trying to trace Sydney Burton born england 19/8/1891 inPortsmouth, England.

Parents names maybe Frederick and Olive.

Had twin brothers Arthur and Thomas and a sister Olive.

Came to Aust and married Gladys Green.

Any info really appreciated. Thanks Gaye.

On more careful deliberation I think his dob maybe out a tad so am thinking that 1903/04 may be closer to the mark.

    Cheers.

When do you have first sighting of Sydney? If he was born pre-1901 we can find him - and his parents - on the census.

No Frederick Burton with wife Olive on 1901 census in Hampshire. No marriage found for them either.

If you get Sydney's marriage cert to Gladys, it should state his father's name and occupation - I think, not sure about Australian certs.

    Thanks Helen & Welshlady.

Is Portsmouth & Portsea in the same area. Sounds like they should be.

I am actually looking Sidney up for a friend (He's her father) so it takes a little time to get back with the answers.

She thought he was born around 1903 but on looking on the Aust National Archives I found a Sidney Burton dob 19/8/1891 born in Portsmouth with the next of kin Olive (presumably his mother as he wasn't married then).

Welshlady it sounds like you may have the right family with the brothers and sister. How do you see the parents? Would they be on a census for Portsea or Portsmouth?

If he was born 1891 it would make him a bit old for her father so the 1907 sounds more like him.

    Many thanks Gaye.

yes portsmouth and portsea are the same place. just a difference in name for the registration area pre and post 1900. cant seem to find a frederick and olive together in 1901 but of course if the date of birth is 1907 then olive is not the mother anyway. to be sure of facts you would be best buying the marriage certificate of sydney to gladys. it should give some more concrete facts to go on and then might be able to trace them for you. you dont want to be chasing the wrong family by guesswork.

the olive i found died - does that fit in with what you know

    Olive Florence M BurtonEstimated Birth Year:abt 1892Year of Registration:1894Quarter of Registration:Jan-Feb-MarAge at Death:2District:Portsea Island (1837-1900)County:HampshireVolume:2bPage:369

if olive didnt die - there are two other olives born hampshire ( the county which portsmouth is in) but they are 1920 and 1922 - are these too late.

    ALFRED C BURTON

can find the arthur charles whose birth i found living in 1901 with parents james and sarah and 4 siblings but none of them thomas ( which as a twin he should be there ) so that seems to rule him out

    THOMAS BURTON

again i can find the thomas whose birth i found living in portsmouth with parents thomas and grace and siblings - none of them arthur so he seems to be out too.

did the siblings go to australia too - did they remain in uk and marry etc. is it likely there were more siblings whose names she doesnt know?

lookied in 1901 census for the sydney born 1891 to try and rule him out. cant find one with a mother olive - but then just thought olive might be his sister olive given as next of kin.

still cant find that sydney - none of the dates fit exactly. there are three sydneys born hampshire around that area - none have the right sibling though. but if they are born after 1901 which is likely they wont show up anyway.

Hi Welshlady, Thanks for that info. Sidney came to aust with his twin brothers, Arthur (or Alfred) and Thomas. Olive (sister) must have come at some time, either with them or after as she more or less brought up my friend. Will quizz her for more details asap. She is sure their mother and fathers names were Frederick and Olive. Thanks for your help. Will keep in touch.

    Cheers Gaye.

    Hi,

A family member of mine is Sydney Burton born in 1888 in Portsea (Portsmouth), married Olive Pounds and moved to Australia, where he joined the army.

Is this the same person? he was also in the Salvation Army.
