    Default Any Ideas Please?

My maiden name is Marriott and so far I have traced the line back to a James Marriott whom died in Great Horwood, Bucks in 1841 aged 83. I know that his 1st wife Ann died there in 1794 and that he remarried there in 1797 but up until now I have not been able to trace his birth.

I think that he may have been born in Quinton ,Northants. There is a baptism there for a James Marriott on 11.10.1757.

How can I prove one way or another if it is the same person? Are there any records that might help me?

    Thank You

    Kathy.

The marriages before 1837 don't give any information about the bride or groom's fathers. But witnesses might be a clue as they are often relatives. I'd check the parish he was married in for baptisms and then move out, checking nearby ones first. People did move round quite a bit, but the majority moved less than 10 miles from their birthplace.

Both the Quinton and Maids Moreton records are perfectly possible as you are right on the Bucks/Northants border here.

I agree start with the marriage record - also try to see if you can eliminate one of the birth records by looking for marriages - also check first names in each family to to see if there are any patterns

Thank you Welshlady, Helen and Gillian for your thoughts.

I have taken them on board and am hoping to go to the Bucks. records office soon to explore further.

    Hello,

Don't forget to look for variations of the surname such as Merritt.

    Regards
