THOMAS john barry military history wanted

John was born 1809c married catherine nee colclough.

Am interested in finding info on his military life as his children were born in East Indies Ireland and England. Believe he was a Major in 61st regiment about 1840's.

Can I find out his rise thru the ranks? when discharged.?

Other places he may have served. Who were his siblings and parents.?

Sorry if this is asking too much of you.

Can I help with anything in New Zealand?

Being an Officer thier promotions were listed in the London Gazette which is available online at:

www.gazettes-online.co.uk The search is on OCR so only searches on exact words or phrases. So Thomas is not an easy name to search.

I found 4 refernces to John Barry Thomas between 1830 & 1860, there could be more.

22/11/1836 page 2 Captain Ceylon Rifle Company

27/10/1837 page 2 Captain 61st Foot

27/3/1846 page 17 Major 61st Foot.

23/3/1847 page 2 Major 9th Foot
