    Default Canadian Help please

    Hi all

I and fellow researchers are needing help with Canadian Look ups.

We only have Ancestry UK and apparently to access canada info you have to sub for a year and not PAYV.

    The information we have is:

Ellen ELLIS born 8th Nov 1880 to William John Ellis & Selina Rippon, at Handsworth/Woodhouse, Sheffield. We have her on all UK census.

In 1905 she gave birth to a child in Blackpool who she gave up for adoption.

Her father died in 1915 and she was named in his Will.

She emigrated to Canada c1911. She married a Charles MacLean of Montreal, Quebec.

Were there any children for this couple? Where did they live?

Where and when did they die?

Sketchy information is that Food Parcels were sent back to family in Sheffield during 2nd World War...so presumably it was Ellen her hubby or her children??!

    Any help appreciated

    Thanks

    Loz

    Hi Lozzie,

The latest Canadian census is for 1911. I cannot find her on the passenger lists. Do you know if anyone else accompanied her ?

    Hi Lozzie,

The problem is that there were quite a lot of Ellen Ellis' going to Canada around that time and most were from Yorkshire or Lancashire. I cannot find one that didn't travel without other Ellis' though.

    Hmmm

    Her siblings were:

    Edith born 1889

    Elizabeth born 1886

    Bruce born 1884

Her 2 elder brothers were already married by 1901....so wouldnt have thought they travelled with her

Horace born 1874 and Matthew 1877

I dont think her parents went with her....so if it was any other Ellis she travelled with it would have been one of her many many cousins

I can't find an emigration record for an unmarried Ellen Ellis at around that time.

I think the LDS have filmed Quebec church records (look at record collections on familysearch) - not sure what dates - it might be worth contacting the LDS for advice

    Hi Loz,

I also have family in Canada and haven't found it very easy to track them down. I thought I'd have a look for you, and began by doing a search for Ellen Ellis:

    Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935

    Immigration & Emigration

Take a look at the picture to see even more.

I then tried to find her on the 1911 census (and searched over 300 entries) but that didn't surprise me as she was in Quebec, and in the French speaking areas - especially with a French speaking enumerator - spelling can be creative, to put it mildly. I also began to wonder if she was one of those going over in 1912, so simply wasn't there for the census.

I then looked for her marriage but came up zero when looking under Ellen Ellis, but found it when I searched under Charles MacLean. She is down as Helen Ellis, as per below - and clearly that has been her choice to be called Helen (again this may not be a surprise as my ancestors actually changed their surname there because the French found it hard to pronounce it):

1912, St Martins Church, Quebec They didn't use printed forms, just a book with an entry handwritten on the page, but the information makes clear it is her:

Marriage, Charles Maclean of Montreal, bachelor, son of William Maclean and Christina Macmillan, now deceased, his wife, and Helen Ellis, of Montreal, spinster, daughter of William John Ellis and Selina Ripon, now deceased, his wife, were married by authority of licence, with parties being of full age, on the twenty firfth of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and twelve, by me, G Osborne Troop, Rector.

Then come the signatures of both, Ellen signing as Helen

witnesses signature - first Herbert (can't decipher rest - looks a bit like Pardisson), then Elizabeth Miller.

(the original image is on Ancestry and I can send you a copy if you want to send me a private message with your home e mail on).

I went back and researched passenger lists and 1911 census under Helen Ellis, but no joy, so she probably came out, as Ellen Ellis, in 1912.

    Hope this helps.
