    Default DAVIS London 1841 census

hi, I am hoping someone can help with any information on the following couple, the name DAVIS is often given as DAVIES:

Thomas DAVIS b.unknown, father William DAVIS (milkman?), mother ?

married at St. George's Hanover Sq London 21 Apr 1838

Matilda WATTS b.unknown, father John WATTS (gardener), mother ?

Thomas' residence at the time of marriage given as White Horse St London, he would have been a servant or labourer.

I cannot find them in the 1841 England census but they did not arrive in South Australia until May 1849.

    Their children:

Elizabeth Anne baptised Mortlake Surrey 1842

Thomas Hand baptised Mortlake Surrey 1844

Walter Charles baptised Mortlake Surrey 1847

Arthur Joseph b.1851 Adelaide South Australia

Frank Watts b.1852 Clare South Australia

John Frederick b.1856 Clare South Australia

All children died in South Australia & the Boys names keep recurring through our family.

If nothing comes up thanks for looking anyway.

this could be the details of frederick with matilda on the 1841 census - but birth date slightly out

    Frederick Samuel DavisGender:MaleBirth Date:13 Sep 1837Christening Date:6 Jun 1841Christening Place:Mortlake, Surrey, England Age at Christening:3 Father's Name:Thomas Davis Mother's Name:Matilda Ann Eliza

this might be the birth registration going on the middle name giving a more likely birth date

    Frederick Samuel Davis

    Year of Registration:1840 Quarter of Registration:Jul-Aug-Sep District:Rotherhithe (To 1869) County:Surrey Volume:4 Page:360

could have been another child too

    James DavisGender:MaleChristening Date:21 Jul 1846Christening Place:Mortlake, Surrey, EnglandFather's Name:Thomas DavisMother's Name:Matilda

this could be the birth reg

    James Alfred DavisYear of Registration:1845 Quarter of Registration:Jan-Feb-Mar District:Rotherhithe (To 1869) County:Surrey Volume:4 Page:440

there are a few deaths around that could have been theirs. i assume they are not on the passanger list and therefore died before they went to australia.

I have bits of information. Ann Watts had a sister Sarah Watts born Belfast 1842 her father was a Daniel Watts. Ann was in Mortlake with her grandparents William Stacey and Frances Edwards on 1841 census. Can't find Ann or Sarah's mother, I assume a Miss Stacey!!! Sarah married in Chelsea, London in 1868 but died 1874. 1881 Ann Watts now Ann Martin looking after Sarah's children. I would like to get that connection between Ann and Sarah with the grandparents William and Frances.

    G'day,
I have not been able to establish the WATTS & STACEY connection apart from the 1841 census & information from welshlady:
6 Jun 1841 High Street, Mortlake, Surrey, England Census:
William STACEY age 70, occupation Smith, not born in County; Frances STACEY, 70, born in County; Elizabeth WATTS, 13, not born in County; Ann WATTS, 11, not born in County; Matilda DAVIS, 20, F.S. (female servant?), born in County ; Frederick DAVIS, 1, born in County.

& that Matilda WATTS (father John) married Thomas DAVIS 1838 London, ages listed as full age. Thomas drowned while drunk, River Murray, South Australia1857 leaving Matilda to provide for 6 children, his death not recorded but substantiated through newspaper reports.
Matilda DAVIS nee WATTS, father John, age given at 2nd marriage, 1858, South Australia 33 (bc.1828?? - telling porkies)
Matilda WILSON nee WATTS, father John, age given at 3nd marriage, 1873, South Australia 52 (bc.1821)
Age at death in South Australia 1903, 83 by registration (bc.1820), 87 by cemetery records (bc.1813) - if you think these are all over the place try tracking German ancestors in SA in the mid 1800s.
Most probable birth of Matilda: Matilda Ann Eliza WATTS christened 7 Feb 1819 Petersham, Surrey, England parents JohnWatts & Sarah father -familysearch.

That Matilda nee WATTS was living with the STACEYs and other WATTs suggests a family connection but Elizabeth & Ann were not born in Surrey, so was Matilda a sister or an Aunt?
?????? - Elizabeth WATTS Chr.18 Aug 1827 St. Alphage, Greenwich, Kent, England; Ann WATTS b.15 Oct 1830, Chr.5 Nov 1830 St. Alphage, Greenwich, Kent, England, both to John WATTS & Sarah

Don't know how this fits with your records or the Irish connection, Matilda & Thomas arrived S.A. 1849 so not in the 51 census.
