bow creek/ leamouth/ orchard place poplar

My great grandparents( the Lammins and the Hurleys) and their families lived in orchard place poplar,in the 1870's onwards. This was quite a little cut off community from the rest of poplar and I would love to find out more about thier lives. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this place and the other families living there. I know that Lammin, scanlon and jeffries were the main families living there. would love any info anyone has on the people and the area and where they were moved to after about 1930 when the area was deemed uninhabitable. I think they went to canning town but not too sure. Hopefully someone knows some more.

Hi There Sannah,

The Poplar that I know is in the East End of London. The Barking Road, The Blackwall Tunnel...Know the place well. I was born in Westham so neighbours you might very well say. My Grandparents were married in Poplar. Back in the not so good old days the people from Poplar were very very poor. We are talking the East End here and even of today its a working class area. Canning Town is also another place very near to Poplar. You mention Canning Town in your post. I think Orchard Place is London E14.? It might very well have been cut off from the rest of Poplar but Poplar is still Poplar. This link might help..

Thanks for that, it was very intersesting, My Nan was born and brought up in West Ham, maybe she knew your ancestors!!!! I also have a family link to abingdon,berkshire! Isn't it a small world!!

Hi Sannah,

Your Nan might very well know my Ancestors..... There was enough of them that came from Westham and Canning Town. I left England when I was 13 years old but every so often I go back for a holiday.

I was born in Wigston Rd which runs off Prince Regents Lane. By the ripe old age of 5 my family moved to the Barking Rd five minutes from the Westham Football Grounds. As a child I would play in one part of the grounds (The Boleyn Castle) The Castle or Manner as some people called it has long gone but the memories live on. My Mother was born in Tidal Basin which is near the Victoria Docks. My Father was born in Clerkenwell. Your Nan would know both those places. Anyway Sannah if you want to know anything about Poplar and its neighbouring places I,m your girl. Thats if your Nan cant help.
