Thread: Captain Andrew Drummond MBE, Black Watch

Hi all



I'm trying to find out even more about my late cousin Captain Andrew Drummond, Black Watch:



ANDREW DRUMMOND, b. 28 Apr 1902, High Street, Anstruther Wester, Fife; d. 27 Mar 1978, 10 Glentilt Crescent, Perth, Perthshire; m. ETHEL WILSON, 05 Apr 1926, 13 Beaumont Gate, Glasgow; b. Abt. 1899, (Possibly) Glasgow.



The 1926 Marriage Record shows he was a Sergeant Instructor, 1st Bn., Black Watch at Glencorse Barracks, Edinburgh, Midlothian.



From 'Officers of the Black Watch 1725-1986' : page 44:

"DRUMMOND : Andrew MBE, enlisted in the Black Watch 30th July 1919 : Lieutenant (QM) 14 April 1944 : Captain (QM) 1 July 1946 : QM 2nd Bn. January 1947 : QM 1st Bn. 20 September 1947 : Retired 27 November 1948 : Died at Perth 27 March 1978."



His Commission is confirmed in the Supplement to The London Gazette of Friday the 12th of May 1944 : Issue number: 36513, Page number: 2219 reads:

"War Office, 16th May, 1944

Black Watch

Lt. (Qr.-Mr.) Andrew DRUMMOND, M.B.E. (313233) (emergency Commn.) to be Lt. (Qr.-Mr.). 14th Apr. 1944."



and then



His commission is, retrospectively, promulgated in the Supplement to the London Gazette of Friday the 16th of May 1944 : Issue number: 36513, Page number: 2220 reads:

"Black Watch.

R.S.M. Andrew DRUMMOND, M.B.E. (313233) to be Lt. (Qr.-Mr,). 25th Mar. 1944"





This information shows that he was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) BEFORE March 1944 but I can't find out when

Just a thought... would it be worth a trip or a phone call to the Black Watch Museum in Perth.. They just might be able to give you an answer to your query.



I went to the Gordon Highlander museum in Aberdeen and the Archivist there was able to give me some info about my Gr Gr Grandfather who served in the regiment in the 1880's

Thanks Raven ... I've got 'lots of fingers' in 'lots of pies' on this one.



Archives at the Black Watch Museum in Balhousie Castle have been approached but seem to be dragging their heels. That's the impatientce coming out in me now! When I say, "Jump!" I expect the answer to be, "How High?" That's what comes of being ex-service I suppose! Even the Ceremonial Secretariat at the Cabinet Office have become involved!! I've got some help from the Black Watch website forum members ... but there's still that elusive date of award to find out!

Hi Kari



There was nothing on the Birth, Marriage or Death registers relating to him to suggest he had. Neither was there any middle initials for him in The London Gazette .. and we know how pedantic old newsprint compositors used to be!
