    Default watermen/lightermen,london 1871-1915

    Hi,

Three generations of my family were watermen and lightermen. Where can I find records for them? In 1871 John young was a waterman and was living in woolwich, His son John (possibly Joseph) was a lighterman(barge) in 1891 but seems to have become a fishmonger by 1901! and his son Charles was a lighterman in 1912 and died in an accident at work in about 1915 aged 25.

Does anyone know where I can find out more about them especially Charles. Have tried parishregister.com but can't seem to navigate myself round the site to find any info.

Any help or ideas would be very much appreciated.

Hi Sannah - records for watermen/lightermen are held at the Guildhall Library in London

will tell you about opening times etc. From personal experience I can assure you that the staff there are the friendliest and most helpful I have come across.

You don't need to book, but its worth checking that the records you want are available.

I'd suggest you e-mail them to ask how easy they are to access, whether there are indexes etc.

As for Charles - his death cert would give cause of death and whether or not there was an inquest. From that you can get local newspaper reports of the inquest.

Try the Museum in Docklands, who have a wealth of info on this. They hold many records so should be able to help.

    Happy hunting
