    Default Elusive PEAKMAN Marriage 1830/40s

    Hi everyone

A great name to work with ... Peakman, Peckman, Pateman, Penkman etc etc etc. You get the idea.

Sometime ago I was given Jane Poole as Joseph Peakman's wife, with no supporting evidence. An innocent at the time, I took this as gospel. As it was on the periphery of my tree, I let it go. Now it has come back to haunt me.

I hear you think "There but for the grace of God go we all!!"

I am trying to confirm that a marriage took place between Joseph Peakman and Jane Pool(e) sometime in the late 1830s.

    Marriages Dec 1842

    Kempson Jane Birmingham 16 478

    PEAKMAN Joseph Birmingham 16 478

Joseph and Jane are producing children from 1837 then a five year gap until 1842 and then on until probably 1861.

The 1837 John is certainly linked through siblings in various censuses with those born in the late 1850s.

It's a pretty complicated family aand any leads will be appreciated.

Anybody who can assist will get a Fegan A* in Genealogy, and my undying thanks!!

    Best wishes and thanks

    Well done Notebook.

What a Star!! As promised an A****** in Genealogy. Thank you very much.

    Next question.

Did Jane Pool die and did Joseph marry Jane Kempson in 1842, or is that a totally different Joseph Peakman??

    Thank you

    Mark

Thank you Mark for my award

I've looked at the various censuses and John (1837) does seem to follow through and I can't see another Joseph & Jane Peakman. On freebmd I can't find the death of a Jane Peakman who died before 1842 (could be it hasn't been transcribed yet) when the marriage of Joseph Peakman & Jane Kempson took place.

The only way to find out is to purchase the marriage certificate of Joseph Peakman & Jane Kempson which you probably know already.

    Hi Mark

Or you could purchase a birth certificate of one of the kids born after 1842..that will give mothers maiden name and it will be relevant to your tree

If it does turn out to be the 2nd Jane...then you can go ahead and buy the marriage cert

    More awards.

That is the route to go.

The absence of the second Joseph Jane combo is the bugbear.

Jane is pretty consistent with Wolverhampton as birth place.

71 Census gives Joseph as a widower. Only Jane death is Meriden in 69, aged 53.

    Thanks again

    Best wishes

    Hi Mark

Joseph's eldest son John was born in Wolverhampton, but the other 10 children were born in the Birmingham/Aston area. Not surprising when you consider Joseph was a metal dealer/refiner/caster at 2 Gibb Street, Aston, and his son John lived at no.1 Gibb Street with his wife Hannah (nee Cox) and their children Ellen Bertha and Thomas Cox Peakman - sorry I cannot tell you if Jane Pool died and Jame Kempson became his second wife, but you may know by now.

Curiously, Esther Jane KEMPTON became the second wife of Edward Albert Peakman in 1885. Edward was the son of William Peakman, brother to Joseph, so Joe was Edward's uncle. As you say, it is a mixed up family. You probably know that Joseph's father was Samuel who also had 10 children, one of whom was my g.g. grandmother. All very fascinating but maybe not much use to you. good hunting Audrey

That has confirmed what we were looking for.

This family is nowhere near Wendy's direct line, so I can't justify buying certificates.

I can now tell you that Jane Pool was still alive in 1854 as she made her mark on the birth certificte of her daughter Eliza born 9th April 1854. Father of Eliza was Joseph, metal dealer. any use? Audrey
