Thread: 1901 Address Search - Guernsey

Could any wonderful person look up who lived at:



RUETTES BRAYES, ST MARTINS, GUERNSEY in 1901



It is the birth address of my Grandfather Walter Hugh Sebire b 3 Nov 1903 (who was later adopted by Mr & Mrs E A Wade).



Walter Hugh Sebire was born to Nellie Smith (who was not married), who actually lived at the Weighbridge Inn, St Sampsons, Guernsey with her family so perhaps she was sent to St Martins to have her baby?



I know it is quite sad, as I have a handwritten note signed by Nellie Smith - giving her baby away to Mr & Mrs Wade. Mr Wade was in the British Army and later became a Regimental Sergeant Major.

Actually there were more households in Ruettes Brayes, the census is confusing as after the two I posted it said 'end of the ecclesiastical parish ' but on the next page there's more. Will post details.

Great information. Thought I might find a simple clue as to who Nellie Smith might have been staying with and why but I am finding that what you think is:

- going to be simple always becomes

- more complicated

- but more of a challenge!

- and just more addictive!!!!!

Do you have Nellie on the 1901 census? and the Wades ......did they live on Guernsey do you know, if so do you have them on the 1901, and if not do you have their first names?



As you say..........family history isn't always easy but is extremely addictive

Yes I do have Nellie Smith in 1901. I know nothing of her beyond 1905 though when my Grandfather was adopted by Mr & Mrs Wade. Whether she later married? or what?



Mr & Mrs Wade I have found - with the aid of an old autograph book, which was my only clue - that was quite a search! Still have deaths to add but getting there!



There was actually a Walter Hugh Sebire b1880 on Guernsey (could this have been my Grandfather's birth Father?). I have his details up to him being in the Royal Engineers in WW1 but then he too disappears . I feel that addiction coming on again!!!!!

I had a Great Grandfather who landed up as a Regimental Sergeant Major Wade his wife was Mrs Alice Wade, they resided in the village of Yetminster Dorset.

If you wish I can search my attic to find more info but we were not aware of any adoption, but this does not mean that they did'nt adopt.

Thanks for your reply and such a coincidence we both have an RSM Wade!

My RSM Wade (who was my Great Grandfather as he adopted my Grandad), was married to Mary Annie Edwards. Found this out on The Manchester Regiment Site Forum (themanchester.org/forum - good site for those researching that particular Regiment) where I was able to get all the information I have currently. My RSM Wade was born in Hulme nr Manchester.

My main problem now is finding Walter Hugh Sebire after he left the army in 1918 . How are you getting on with your family tree?

A coincidence for sure that we both had a RSM Wade hidden in the cupboard, just put your back into that digging and who knows what will surface !!!!
