    Default coroners inquest

How can I find out more about a coroners inquest on an ancestor that was held in 1879?

The death certificate for my Napoleon James Bolt says he died at Marlbro street Workhouse, reg district St Saviour Surrey. Died 28th Jan 1879. registered 1st Feb 1879. certificated received from William Carter, Coroner for Surrey. Inquest held 1st Feb 1879.

The cause of death was natural but would there be any record of the inquest?

Best bet is to contact Southwark Libraries. They probably have copies of old papers and as you have an exact date from the death cert, they can probably also supply a photocopy of a report for a small fee.

Inquest papers themselves, including post-mortem reports are hit and miss. Sometimes they survive, sometimes not. Best bet is the relevant records office.

    Also try searching familyhistoryonline.net

I found references to documents in the quarter sessions naming my Great Great Grandfather in the year that he died. I used the references to order copies of the documents from the Shropshire Archives and I shortly received a coroners report (not that it said much more than what I knew, but it was still an insteresting document).
