Default St Leonard Shorditch old streets?

I wonder if anyone can help me? I have an ancestor who is listed in the Old Bailey proceedings as being a victim of a robbery from his public house that he ran at St Leonards Shoreditch in 1818. It doesnt give the name of the public house or his address but the thief was know to him and he went to her house next morning at Johns Row /City Rd St Leonards Shoreditch.

Can anyone pin point these streets on a map and any public house that might be close by to it? The thief was a regular at the pub and would think that she lived quite close.I have tried googling the map but the streets dont seem to exist any more.

I would be very grateful for any help

Hi Nana. My ancestor was Paul Rider, a very elusive man at the best of times I was playing with the Old Bailey site and was surprised to find him there.

I have been trying to track him for years, In 1818 he was publican somewhere in St Leonard Shoreditch. I only have the 2 streets named in the proceedings as the address of the thief that would give a general area. In 1828 [dont know how many years around 1828 ]he is publican at The Grapes in Gainsford Street /Thomas street. From 1836 -1841 he is publican at The Rose and Crown 113 Long Lane Bermondsey. He moved to Stockton Durham in 1841 and died 1843.

    Cheers

    Hi seeker

I could not finder a Rider in the 1811 london Directory . The London Pub site (Londonpublichouse.com) records 243 pubs in Shoreditch.

Maps of Shoreditch of that time showing City Road are

    1811 http://www.oldlondonmaps.com/1811pages/1811-03.html

    1827 http://users.bathspa.ac.uk/greenwood/map_c6u.html

    1827 http://archivemaps.com/mapco/cruchley/cruch05.htm

today http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=532198&Y=182661&A=Y&Z=1Ithink it is now Lever street

    1790's very detailed http://www.oldlondonmaps.com/horwood...wood05201.html

City road is in the top RH corner but jonh's row is in the Parish of St Luke

I think the Sherherd & Sheperdess is a pub on the 1811 map.

    Hope this helps
    Regards David

Thanks David. If I can work out the nearest pub [which might be the Shepherd & Shepherdess] I can possibly find where he was. Cheers

    Hi Colin

a lot of mentions on the web to the Eagle tavern as it was a music hall from 1825 built on the site of the Shepherd & Shepherdess ale house and tea room established in 1743. The Eagle features in the nursery rhyme "Pop goes the Weasel" !!!
