Thread: Balaam Marriage

Morning All,

Maternal GGGF William Balaam was living with "Mariah" on the 1881 census, both born in Brockford, Suffolk; (he @ 1845, she @ 1842.)

Cannot find the marriage for these two. From ages of children probably @ 1866. There is a William Balaam on Bosmere 4a 849 for 1865 but no entry for a possible wife on freebmd.

Clues to her surname most welcomed!

Did you get this cert and did it prove to be the wrong one??

1881 census gives a son called Harry Keeble. Is he William Balaam's illegit son by a Ms Keeble, or could Keeble be Mariah's maiden name?

There's a 9 year old Maria Keeble in BrockfordcumWetherinsett, born Brockford 1842 in 1851 census HO107; Piece: 1795; Folio: 58; Page: 13

She's described as "mother in law" in the index! In fact the head of household is William Page, with him is HIS mother-in-law Phillis Keeble a 74-yr old widow, and Phillis Page, William's sister-in-law, as well as Elizabeth Keeble and Maria who are identified as Phillis' daughters.

Sorry Raven, yes I pursued the GRO and they could not find it (!)

What's thrown me is that the 1881 census shows a Harry Keeble living with William and Mariah and described as "son" i.e. William's son. Harry is 20 yrs old with a gap to the next child at 14 yrs old.

Did William marry a Keeble in a first marriage? Is Mariah another Keeble?

Jeuel's 1851 lead is a good candidate... there couldn't have been too many Mariah's living in the hamlet of Brockford....

I tried ancestry's 14 day trial but found their search engine frustrating to use in comparison to (say) familysearch etc.

Apologies for getting you to run in circles.

It is evident form your research that the Harry Keeble on the 1881 census is a stepson not "son" as written.

... and from Jeuel's discovery on the 1851, I can now pursue this line of research.
