    Hello,

People need something a little more concrete for anyone to be able to help you. Like how do you know it is Ripon area where he was born and roughly when? It is a big area.

Ripon is in North Yorkshire. Ripon Historical Society might be able to help if you have definite facts that they can work with.

    http://www.riponhistoricalsociety.org.uk/records.htm

Similarly, Ripon Studies Research Centre http://www.riponlsrc.supanet.com/

Genuki has an awful lot of information about Yorkshire but because it is so big, it needs a lot of studying to find records for specific places

    http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/

and of course, North Yorks Record Office

    http://www.northyorks.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=3134

As he was a sailor you might find a Will he made before he left England. Try searching Nationl Archives.

    http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/

IR 26 is the Series reference number for the registers of Legacy Duty, Succession Duty and Estate Duty 1796-1903

The ships (names) on which he served as a Naval Officer and possibly from them, his service record might be available. The Navy List did not start until 1814, however.

And the Naval Records (online) from the National Archives do not start until 1853. Prior to this most servicemen from the ranks were press ganged (forced on to ships) or tricked into "taking the Kings shilling".

If he was an Officer from the start, which I doubt unless he came from a very wealthy family, you might find something in the NRO

    http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/d...vy-service.asp

If you go to the Imperial War Museum site

http://www.iwm.org.uk/server/show/nav there are helpful tips on searching for Navy Men. The Royal Navy site http://www.royal-navy.mod.uk/ is mostly about the modern Navy but there is a history page.

I hope some of this helps.

    Yours

    Victoria
