Thread: Help Please Look Up Barker/Cook

Could someone help im trying to get possible birth dates for my greatgrandparents.

My grandmother was born Winnifred Barker 3 March 1916 in Thorpe Hesley, died 26th November 1996.

I think her father was Arthur Barker and mother Margaret Cook but keep hitting brick walls.

Her married name was Portman and ive managed to get alot of information from this side of the tree, could do with a little help to get started on the other side.

If you get the birth cert it will give you Arthur's occupation - which might be different from the one Winifred gives on her marriage cert. As Winifred was born during WW1, Arthur might well be in the army. You can look to see if you can find his army records (though as he has a relatively common name, it might be a lot of trawling through papers, but the records do give names of wives and children).

I can't see a likely marriage in Freebmd. Is this where you are stuck?

There are 5 Arthur Barkers in Yorkshire in 1901, but only 2 in Wortley.



One was born 1879 and is already married.

The other born 1896 living with parents George S. and Jane A. Barker.



The younger one seems most likely, but if your gt grandparents didn't marry, it might be because it was the older one who was already married.



You need to get Arthur's occupation to help sort out which is likeliest candidate.

Yes its the married date im coming to a stop on, ive scrawled through many paper's over the past two weeks and getting nowhere, There first child was born around 1910 so would guess they would have married around this time!

There's only ONE Margaret Cook with Wortley as keyword in 1901 census, b. 1895 in Huddersfield.



Margaret Eleanor Cook, parents Fredk Lisley and Eleanor Beatrice. Again, you could do with some further info to see if this is her or not.



If you can't find the Barker-Cook marriage in GRO indexes, I'd suggest you contact the relevant local register office to see if they have it there.

The second one born 1896 seems spot on i think his father's name was George.

Thanks for that still not getting any married date though, strange but i'll keep trying.

I looked at WW1 service records, there's no Arthur Barker listed with keyword Wortley. Not all the service records survived, so this doesn't mean he wasn't in the army.
