Default Was Joseph Harris suicide in Henley, Oxon??

    Hi everybody

Has anyone any ideas of how to find out online about a supposed suicide of one Joseph Harris [b 1806 in Oxfordshire] in his eel & pie or bakers shop in Henley some time in the 1830's?.

He was married to Eleanor Streek [b 1806 in Berkshire] & we can't find any of the family in the 1841 Census.

Found Eleanor a widow in the rest of the censuses.

Their marriage is also not found.. Children b 1832, 33 and 36/37 Not in BMDs.

    Any help would be welcome.

I don't think you will find that info online, Mark, unless you are lucky enough to find someone researching the same family. You will need to find out if inquest reports are still extant, and failing that, local newspaper archives. How did you learn of this suicide? And his wife's maiden name, if you don't have a Parish marriage entry?

Not on The Times Online. I think you'd need to consult local newspapers, the burial register etc. Cause of death sometimes listed in burial registers. Local newspapers would be at relevant county records office, local history centre etc.

When you say you can't find any of the children in BMDs - they won't be in the births registration indexes, as that didn't start till 1 July 1837.

How do you know about the supposed suicide? Where is Eleanor in the rest of the censuses>

    Helen and Victoria.

    Thank you for your interest.

51 census puts the family, Eleanor, and the three children together with her father in Henley.

The suicide is a family story we're trying to confirm.

I also thought the local papers was the answer, just thought there may be another way that I'm unaware of. This game changes so rapidly, we learn stuff that wasn't available a year ago. (We disproved a 30 year belief just a few months ago. Slight difference between north Lincolnshire, and the depths of County Cork!!)

    Thank you and best wishes

HI, No further info on this one but I am descendant of this fellow. Am also researching his story but no more has turned up. My g-grandmother told of the eel & pie shop (in Henley-on-Thames near bridge) and the story of his ? suicide. I wonder if we have chatted about this before!

Hi Mandy ... it's your rumour that MarkF is trying to confirm on my account! What goes around, comes around - isn't that what they say? Liz

Hi Liz, I suspected a connection somewhere, somehow! Nice to meet up with you again. Have just got back into this stuff so was surprised to find this story on here. Well, if we keep trying............. I assume nothing ground breaking has appeared over the past few months
