Thread: Ancestry Canada lookup please

On A couple of UK census i've found the following people who are over here as either pupils or teachers and some staying with relies



MARIA FURNISS B 1879

JOSEPH FURNISS B 1880

HELEN FURNISS B 1882

ALBERT ANTHONY FURNISS B 1885

all born Canada



They all may/may not be related but could a lookup be made on the Canadian census especially for any parents who came over from UK.

Hi Andrew,

From your post I take it that they were on the 1891/1901 England census, the girls in Staffordshire and the boys in Putney and Standon Herts.

I will have a look at the 1911 Canada census, the girls may be harder to find as they could be married.

Yes your correct. Helen and Maria are actually at a convent as teachers, i think, and are shown as single. Joseph and Albert are at school. My presumption, based on YOB's, are that they are related and sent here for schooling etc. I'm also presuming that there parents are from the UK.

My dad always said he thought there was a connection with Canada and as they are with one of our relatives in the convent, she gave up married life and became a nun apparently, it was worth looking into.

If there pre 1901 census can you see if any parents are mentioned. Also, if possible, look into the passanger lists to see if when they may have arrived in Canada.

I think I saw a Sister Furniss on one maybe worth looking into.

Hi Andrew , I have found an Albert Furness b 1885 Canada on the 1891 England census Leamington in Warwickshire as a visitor. He looks like he is with his parents Albert H Furness a landownerb 1841 Canada and Clotillde b 1853 Canada. Not sure if this is your Albert Anthony Furniss but the age fits.

I think that I have found Maria's baptism in Quebec.If this is the correct one it looks like the Albert H Furniss in the 1891 is her father. If you PM me your email I will send to you. Her Given name Marie Eliza Lalla Furniss.

It looks like Albert H and Clotillde married in Quebec 1878.

I will look for other baptisms to see if I can tie the family together.

Helen is back in Quebec in 1901 with Albert H and Clotillde.

Now comes the confusing bit.

I have the family on the 1891 Canada census in Quebec. No Albert Anthony but a Hector A O Furniss same age.



Albert H Furniss 50 Clotilde Furniss 38 Hector A O Furniss 6 Marie Furniss 12 Joseph Furniss 11 Helen Furniss 8

All the ages tie up. But this census give Albert H's place of birth as England.

Census taken 27 April 1891 . England census taken 5 April 1891.

I have sent you 2 census , 1 baptism and 1 marriage.

The passenger lists not showing any full matches , a few Mrs Furniss, a Miss H Furniss . There is not an awful lot of detail on the passenger lists , no ages not many full names, or place of birth.

I have looked at the 1911 Canada census and have found a poss for Albert Anthony, same age but recorded as Albert Furniss along with wife Anna , no other family.
