    Default First marriage Mystery

Following up on a previous post, would you wizards try to resolve another ancient mystery for me?

William Edward Green, born Jan 23rd 1860 in Christchurch, Blackfriars, mothers maiden name was probably Mary Ann Tunbridge. They are shown on 1861 census (Mary is widowed); with her brother William (aged 21) as head of household, living in St George's, Southwark.

I now know that on William's marriage certificate it states William's father's name as William (Occupation "Engineer"). However, a Mary Ann Tunbridge appears to have married a 'Joseph Green' in 1847. Is he one and the same? and if so, where was he in 1841?

William Edward's Father is our Paternal ancestor and his wife's second marriage the reason for our change of surname.

    Many Thanks

    Hi Ixion,

In order to verify 100% who William's mother is I would suggest that you buy his birth certificate and this way you can be certain that you are heading in the right direction. Therefore you could confirm we have found the right marriage for his mother and then can see what we can find for his father.

I have checked on the 1851 Census for a Joseph and Mary Ann and can't at the moment find anything, but will check further.

Having checked for a birth for William I have come across 2

William Edwin Waters Green 1860 1st Qtr Camberwell Vol 1d Pg 491

and there was a Edwin William Green 1860 1st Qtr Lambeth Vol 1d Pg 287.

The Edwin William Green seems to coincide with the Edwin Wm Green found on the 1861 and 1871 Censii.

This is where I get confused ... You say he is William Edward yet the first two Censii he appears as Edwin William.

    Hope this makes sense..lol

    Hi Raven,

Yes, he is an elusive individual to say the least!

William's marriage certificate (in my possession) shows an age of 32 in 1892. It shows his name as William Edward Green on the GRO copy but William Edwin Green on the copy (same entry number) at Poplar Registry Office. His place of birth is given as 'Christchurch, Blackfriars'.

There is a Mary Ann (His Mother?) and our William, living with a Chas. Powell on the 1871 census (courtesy of 'Light's' research) and this could be a second marriage. (One of the witnesses to Williams Marriage is a Charles John Robert Powell and he is mentioned on that census.)

It seems very odd that William would put his fathers name on the marriage ceertificate as 'William' (Engineer), if this was not the case. True, the Birth Certificate would be the key but which William do I buy!?

    Hi Ixion,

after much deliberation I think I would plump for the Edwin William Green born in Lambeth... For some reason the other one just doesn't feel right...
