    Default KNIGHT Ewhurst Ssx

I have a John KNIGHT (also spelled Jon NITE). Married to Sarah BAKER. 27 June, 1726. In Ewhust, East Sussex. I am unable to find his birth or christening. I also require parents for John.

My possibillities :- Mary KNIGHT born 17 April, 1703. Ewhurst Ssx. Her parents are Henry KNIGHT & Elizabeth (nee BRANN). Mary might be John's Sister.

There is also a Edward KNIGHT & Eliz. With a son John, born 4 March, 1708. Ditchling, E/Ssx. Not far from Ewhurst. All above names fit in with process of family names.

Could anyone show the way of solving my problem ?

    Many thanks Jimbo.

There is a baptism index for Sussex - I am not sure how complete but it has fairly good coverage.

In addition to the Ditchling baptism there are these for around the right date - I haven't had time to check the map as yet as to whether any look likely

18 Jun 1704 Battle St Mary father John Knight labourer, mother ?

10 Aug 1699 Cuckfield Holy Trinity parents John & Elizabeth

15 Jan 1705 or 6 Hartfield St Mary parents Robert & Susanna

? Dec 1709 Heathfield All Saints parents Arthur & Jane

14 Feb 1701 or 2 private baptism Keymer St Cosmos & St Damian father John Knight jnr

It is always worth checking burials to see if you can exclude any on your shortlist.

I am sure these will confuse you further but that is the way of it when you get so far back in your research!

Hi Gillian. Very grateful for the look up. I have some of those on print outs from IGI. Problem is that KNIGHT is such a common name, that it is difficult to sort the chaff ffrom the wheat. Sarah Baker, whom John married. Is believed to have from Northiam, about 5/6 miles north east of Ewhurst.

Is it possible to obtain a marriage certificate from Lewis, Ssx ? Could I also get the birth index from there ?

My problem with ancestors from Ireland is much worse.

    Regards .... Jimbo

    Hi Jimbo

No such thing as a marriage certificate at that date - just an entry on the parish register. You could email the East Sussex County Archives to see what they would charge for sending you a copy - it's a nice thing to have but highly unlikely to have any additional information.

Or you could order the film to view at your nearest LDS centre and take a copy there - this would be cheaper.

I see Sarah's birth is a submitted record - I could check this against other sources in the next couple of weeks if that is any use? (though I see there are other Sarah Bakers in Northiam at around the right time)

Many thanks Gillian. Any help what-so-ever Will be very much appreciated. I should immagine that Sarah would have been born aruond 1710 + or -.

My excuse for not going to LDS is that it is about 20 miles from here. I shall have to change my mind about that.

    Hi Jimbo

From the Sussex baptism index (which confirms the submitted entries on the IGI) - all Sarah Bakers in Northiam -

    4 May 1701 parents John & Elizabeth

    17 Sep 1696 parents Zebulon & Hannah

    27 Sep 1698 parents William & Elizabeth

    2 Feb 1705/6 parents William & Elizabeth

Thank you once again Gillian. I shall now have to work on these BAKER"S. And, look for a link to the John KNIGHT marriage in 1726. Common recurrance of christian names in the KNIGHT line are :- Henry, John, George, Charles, William, James,Elizabeth, Mary, Frances, Sarah after 1726.

I think a double headed penny might be useful.

    Regards ..... Jimbo.
