John Close was a sailor who deserted from the Royal Navy and was, as a consequence ineligible for a pension. He and his wife Cicely made application to Trinity House for support as they were suffering hardship. However they were awarded only 4/6 per quarter as a result of this representation. Cicely died aged 88 in the Union Workhouse at Tynemouth. Her daughter, Mary Close was transported for life to Australia, arriving in 1833. She married twice. First to John Elliot and subsequently to Henry Hunt, to whom she bore 8 children.

    Hope this helps

My cousin found her death certificate and I have a copy of that and their submission to Trinity House (very dark and almost illegible photocopy). My cousin did all the work, I just copied it all down. We are both descendants.

Mary Close's second husband Henry Hunt (b. Repton, Derbyshire 1793 d. Dapto NSW 1853 m. Mary Close Dapto School House 1837 (i.e. 4 years after she arrived in Oz)

Then Daughter Sarah Hunt b. 1847, d. 1934 m. John Waples (b.1842) in 1864 (also in the Illawarra District of NSW).

Son William Waples 1866-1944 m. Isabella Bates 1870-1951

Daughter Isabella Bates m. Jack Bain

Son John Hector was my father.

Scans are technically challenging at present but will see what I can do. The Trinity House records will be pretty well illegible, I suspect but if I can get the scanner to work I will see what I can do with exposures etc for clarity.

Don't hold your breath though, cos I am presently dying of plane flu and jetlag so nothing is working terribly well, including my brain, lol

OK, the brain is working to the extent that I can transcribe what I have now ...

John Close is the son of John Close of Bedlington and his wife Elizabeth - nee Robinson. He was baptised 19 July 1767 in Bedlington (no further details, sorry).

Cecilia seems to have managed to get born before the wedding. She is named Daughter of John Turner (labourer) and Isabella, his fiancee. Born 29 October and baptised 18 November 1774.

They married by banns on 20 July 1816 at Christ Church, Tynemouth (apparently this is recorded on IGI, so you can check there.)

1815 John was chief mate aboard the coal trader 'Mary'

    1816 he was discharged

1818 health prevented him from working and he and his wife were living in the home of Andrew Hudson in North Shields

He was precluded a pension as he deserted while serving in the Royal Navy (and who can blame him given the conditions back then!). On 17 April 1818 he and Cecily submitted a petition to Trinity House. On 23 November 1820 he was awarded 4/6. This was usually paid per quarter. (at the time a low salary was around 20/- per week!).

They had three daughters, as per the information provided by Kiwi, but I only have info on Mary Ann.

Born c.1907, married 19 April 1829 St Johns Church, Newcastle-on-tyne to Joseph Elliott. One male child, one female child. Separated from Joseph and she and children living iwth Mrs Ruth Carnaby where she also worked as a housemaid.

1 August 1832 Tried with Isabella Mills at the Northumberland Summer Assize for stealing money and sent to Newcastle Gaol.

Newcastle Journal reports: ... on a charge of having stolen, on the 26th ult. ten sovereigns and one half soveriegn in the house of Ruth Carnaby, of Trafalgar Street, widow. It appear that Elliott lodged several weeks in the house of Mrs Carnaby. ON the 26th the family retired to bed, but early in the morning the street door was open, seeral drawers having been ransaked and the money taken out. A quantity of clothes were strewed around the yard, and Elliott got up and assisted to search for the stolen property. Mrs Elliott's little boy, who slept with Elliott, remembered her getting out of bed in the night and other suspicious circumstances arose to ciminate (sic) the two women prisoners. They are both married women, but Elliott is living apart from her husband. ...

    Sentenced to transportation for life.

Henry Hunt, Sarahs future husband, was also a convict. He, and John Bates were tried in the Staffordshire midsummer sessions for stealing bobbins and cotton yarn from his employer.

The high sherrif instructed their removal to Woolwich hulks from where they were transported on the Princess of Orange and the 'Dick', both of which subsequently sailed for Port Jackson (1820).

At the time of marriage, Mary Ann's name had changed to Maria Close. She arrived in Australia on the 'Dianna'.

Hope this is helpful - I doubt I will figure out how to set up the scanner this weekend as more pressing things to attend to. Sorry.
