Thread: Searching For John Smith

Literally, I am searching for John Henry Smith born c 1810 in Hull, Yorkshire.

First discover him in 1841 census married to Eliazbeth Bowen from Pembroke with son Thomas Smith living at Chatham Docks. He was a Royal Marine at the Docks. They go on to have another son on stratford upon avon, Benjamin before moving back to the Chatham area. He later becomes a publican and on the 1851 census is described as a Greenwich Pensioner. He dies about 1853.

Unfortunately on this line - my paternal line i am unable to go back any further, as this is all the info i have.

Until 1980's Chatham had a huge Naval and Army base. I live in the Medway towns which Chatham is a part of what was the Pub called I could tell you if it still exists, were ant of the children born in the towns. Have you tried Medway city ark its all bmd's and its free.

Pub was called Fortunes of War but apparently doesn't exist anymore - Thomas his son was born at the Royal Marine Barracks, Chatham Docks on 20.02.1839. He went on to become a colour serg. in the marines himself and ended up living at 8 Seaview Terrace in Margate with his wife Sarah Marsh, we think he died in 1896 aged 57. I think i'm going to have to go to Kew for more info about John or Hull but its like looking for a needle in a haystack. Thanks will try that one. Nikki
