I have lots of info on my gg grandparents James Old and Mary Jane Hooper but cant get any further back with either of them. I'm hoping someone can suggest a way forward. Sorry for the length of this.
Here's what I know:-
James Old b abt 1819. 1861 & 1881 census have his birthplace as Dorset, 1871 gives Surrey(ancestry transcribes as North Perthe, Surrey but not sure it is), 1891 gives London. 1851 gives what I think is Piddletrenthide, Dorset (ancestry transcribes as Piddle Kent Side) - I'm going with this as it's the most precise and the place does exist but cant find him there - the parish records have been transcribed on opcdorset.com but 1819 is missing.
I can't find him on 1841 census, there is another James Old b Piddletrenthide in abt 1828 but dont think this is him as the census' seem to suggest this James stays there. I know that by 1845 my James is in London - he marries my gg grandmother Mary Jane Hooper 21 June 1845 in Stepney. They stay in London until the 1870's when they move to Hull where they remain until their deaths. James is a shipwright / ship's carpenter all through his life (a profession he passes onto his sons).
I ordered the marriage certificate of James and Mary Jane - this arrived today - it gives James' father as Thomas Old occ-farmer and Mary Jane's father as Robert Hooper, occ-shipwright. It doesnt say that either are deceased - would it do so in 1845 if they were ? The witnesses are a John Fahy and ? Price - neither name rings a bell.
I still can't find anymore info on IGI using these names so what do I do now? Or is the end of the line and there's nothing I can do.
Thanks for any suggestions
