Thread: William Collins

Trying to establish parents / birthplace of William Collins(or Collings). He was b1801 in either Somerset or Mere Wilts. (Was Mere part of Somerset at this time?). He married Catherine (aka Ketura) Knapton on 17/04/1827 in Penselwood, Somerset and all their children were born there. William died in 1847 and Catherine died in 1850 leaving eldest child Ann to bring up the family. The 1841 census gives no place of birth & an IGI search has only provided a birthdate of 1801. Well with a name like William Collins it's extremely difficult to be certain.

However the marriage record does say he is from Mere Wiltshire and there is this baptism -

3rd May 1801 Mere Wiltshire William Collins son of Thomas Collins & Anne

I guess this is probably it - the next William Collins in Mere is 1808 which is probably too late

PS Mere was Wiltshire but take a look at a map - it is only a mile or two along the road from Penselwood
