Default ILLEGITIMATE BIRTH, FATHER NEEDS FINDING

I am wondering if anybody has been in a similar position and can kindly advise me on what to do next

I have a marriage cert with the bride not sharing the same surname as her father. All I have is his name nothing else whatsoever. Is it possible to trace him and find out more about him?

Hoping that someone can help/advise before I give up finally on this line.

    regards

    digger

    Hi Digger,

It is also possible that this is her first Marriage and that he is her real father. If she was born before her parents wedding her surname may have been registered in her mother's maiden name.

Ann Bays was bc 1825, Worcestershire. I have her on census with her stepfather and mother, 1841. 1851 she was married, anmd living with the same family. From her marriage cert, that's where I got her father's name from, which is different to the census. I also have a half sibling's birth cert which states her mother's name was formerly Bayes.

That led me to believe that Ann was illegitimate as there was also a gap between her birth and the next half sibling.

i think she probably was ilegitimate and her real father named on the marriage certificate. did the certificate not give his occupation ? and whether he was deceased. you could then start looking for people of that name and occupation in the area. whether you have any luck might depend upon how common the fathers name was. you poss might find some possibles but whether you could prove it is another thing. parish records sometimes give more info - vicars sometimes added notes in margins about parentage etc.

    Hi Digger,

If you have the fathers name you could possibly try the Worcester branch of the BMSGH.

Hi digger - I'm really confused by this - maybe I'm misreading the query. Could you post the full details ie name of father on marriage certificate, who she is living with on 1841 & 1851 (and where 1851 says she was born?)

Christening 4 Mar 1825 Kidderminster Worcs Ann Bayes parents James & ELizabeth
