Thread: 1891 census look up please.

Hi I am searching for my Grandmother Elizabeth Riley born 1885. She married Thomas W Jones in June 1901 and her father (Thomas Riley) was a brewer.



On the 1901 census, Elizabeth is at Gilfillan Street and listed as sister-in-law to Thomas A Norbury and his wife is Ellen, On their marriage cert(I have details from Liverpool library) Ellens father( Thomas Riley) is a brewer!!! So I am assuming ( I know it doesnt do to assume with ancestry but fingers crossed) Elizabeth and Ellen are sisters? Both are listed as being born in Liverpool, and seem to have the same father.



Can anyone help me find these elusive girls before the 1901 census!!!!



This is my 2nd posting so am hoping someone new maybe able to help me with my search. Many thanks in anticipation Ann

Can you tell us:





When Ellen married Thomas Alfred NORBURY in Dec Qtr 1899, West Derby

• What was her address?
  
• Who were the witnesses?
  
• Was her father said to be deceased?
  
• Was her age in keeping with being born abt 1881?
  
• Is Thomas HAINES, listed as "stepfather" age 48 on the 1901 with Thomas (22) and Ellen (20) NORBURY proven to be Thomas NORBURY's stepfather?
  

I ask because.....



I can see a Thomas A NORBURY age 13, Shop Boy on the 1891 in West Derby, who has a Stepfather named Thomas BLACKBURN, Ships Chandler.

He (Thomas A NORBURY) also has a half-brother named Thomas A BLACKBURN listed as age 4. There are other NORBURY step-children in the house also.



Thomas Alfred NORBURY birth is registered Dec Qtr 1878 West Derby - and the only one on FreeBMD to fit both Ellen RILEY's husband and BLACKBURN's step-son.



In the 1901 Thomas BLACKBURN Snr, is still in West Derby with his wife and chd, including some NORBURY step-chd (but not Thomas A NORBURY) and also including his now 14 yr old son Thomas BLACKBURN.



So....I'm thinking:



1901: Thomas HAINES 48, b Liverpool, no occupation listed.

Could be the Stepfather of Ellen (and Elizabeth?) RILEY, not of Thomas A NORBURY. Funnily enough, the 1901 actual image of the NORBURY household, states Thomas HAINES to be "Stepfather" but the indexed transcript of the entry lists him as "stepfather in law"!!



The catch is - finding Thomas HAINES pre-1901



When Elizabeth RILEY married Thomas William JONES in 1901 Liverpool (Jun Qtr, so must have been soon after the Census):



They were both living at Pitt Street, Liverpool (per yr other post)

• Was she stated as age 16?
  
• Was her father said to be deceased?
  
• Who were the witnesses?

Thomas William Jones age 19, to Elizabeth Riley age 18, 2nd June 1901.Which conflicts with their age on the 1901 census. However there was only one marriage in the Liverpool BMD register with these names in 1901 for over 8 years . So I'm thinkin this has to be them.



This little snippet I got from a researcher in the liverpool Central Library, there were no rules in the early years about what one could enter on marriage certs, and couples often would say they were older, also would enter a friends address in order to marry in a church of their choice and to avoid calling banns in two churches. Phew!!



I have also searched for their witness's Arthur Edward Smedley and Mary Stewart and found nout( a liverpool expression). Apart from they all lived in and around the same area.



I assumed that others listed on a census were listed in order to the head of the household. So I will now search for Thomas Haines as maybe stepfather to the girls.



There is another clue, my own late father had a cousin called Thomas Norbury, and I think it was his father Thomas Alfred that married Ellen?? that was my reasoning when linking Elizabeth to Ellen in 1901.
